I cant remember if this has been asked before,..

I have a load of DVD's that I inherited and I wanted to be able to play them without having to carry them with me.
Why?
Because I dont have TV or reliable internet when I go to Anglesey.

Now the crunch,,,

Is there a simple, VERY SIMPLE DVD ripper that you can suggest? I have searched on this part of the forum, went back 22 odd pages.

What I want is something that I can load, insert DVD and save to a directory,,,

TIA.

It's not TOTALLY simple in that you do have to fiddle with some settings, but I have used Handbrake software - it's free and gives good results.

I use a combination of two tools.
AnyDVD by Slysoft Broken Link Removed
Handbrake free http://handbrake.fr

The reason I do it this way is that if you have a lot of DVD's to rip/transcode then it is best/faster to do them in batches.

I use the AnyDVD software to rip directly to the hard disk. This gives me a direct image of the DVD in question. It takes about 10 minutes or so to rip a DVD and I can do this while doing something else. It pops the disk out when it is ready for the next one.

At the end of the day I will then use the batch transcoding option in handbrake to queue all the ripped DVD's and set it going overnight.
I have used this method to get 20-40 DVD's done in a day easily whilst not missing out on doing other stuff.

The problem I have found with other programs is that a film for instance can take upto an hour and a half to transcode when ripping and transcoding directly from disk at the same time. This means you either have to sit around and wait for that before sticking the next disk in or accept that you will only get 2 or 3 done a day.

For those who don't know...

Ripping is where you copy the data from the DVD unchanged. This can be either 4.7GB of data or 9.4GB if double layer.

Transcoding is where you take the data above which is in multiple files and multiple directories and convert it into a single .mp4 or .mpeg or .avi file for viewing on your computer or devices.

Once a DVD has been ripped and transcoded you can delete the folder containing the raw DVD data or you can keep it for watching it at full quality. If you transcode to a high enough quality it is hard to tell the difference unless you pause both side by side a look carefully.

With handbrake you can set up multiple profiles. I have 3.
Normal - which is used for non action films and normal TV programs
High - which is used for action films and tv programs likely to have chases or fast movement essential to the plot
Super - Which is used for panoramic or cgi based films. things like lord of the rings, Game of Thrones, transformers etc.

You can then select which level of compression/detail you want for each DVD as you add it to the batch.

I have tried many different software packages over the last 5 years including the ones listed above and have settled on these two.
When it comes to transcoding none come anywhere near close to the quality and speed of handbrake. Slysoft has had a 100% success rate on ripping for me. Most others have had failures.

Anyway, sorry for the waffle.

i always thought it was illegal to copy dvd's??
it is.

Although the government will make it legal for us to make copies for personal use of our media - it will not make it legal for people to break the DRM - or more accurately TPM (Technical Protection Measures) that currently makes it difficult to 'rip' your DVDs.

who called you ignorant???:Eeek:
i certainly did'nt and never would on a public forum:Eeek:
i said in British law, ignorance is no defence:thumb:
meaning if you are ignorant of a law it does not stop you being charged and arrested for breaking that law.
"sorry guv i did'nt know i was breaking the law",will not help anyone in court:RollEyes:
