A good friend asked me to find out any details about escorted motorhome tours to Spain and Portugal.

How many people/vans were in your group?

Did you all travel in convoy?

How many events/site seeing trips/meals did it include.

Any details and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes been on two escorted tours, one to Morocco and one to Greece,

Desert Detours gave us a excellent insight into Morocco and everything was made very easy, though there were only 3 in our group sometime we travelled together sometimes on our own.
We found it a good introduction to visiting a country we had not been to before.

Greece...we went with GB Privilge a much larger group of 14 we had the choice of travelling in convoy, we choose to do this and had a brilliant laugh, in fact it was a brilliant holiday, all the sites were booked and we were really looked after, the food was very good when it was included.

Have no complaints about eigher trip.

Between the two we had a really good time, but now feel totally confident to go alone or with fun , but yes they can be a good way to travel.

Yes JJ we went to Canada on an escorted tour with The Caravan & Camping Club, with some trepidation as we had never done one before.

It was good as all the accommodation was booked for us so after the first 2 nights in Vancouver we set off to tour the Rockies. Each night around eight we would get together and be told where the next stop had been booked, how to get there and what we might see on the way. By doing it this way we had all day to do as we wished and take our time as we knew where we were stopping that night. No convoy, and was glad of that, didn't fancy following another van all day. We did meet other vans at times but then they may go off to a different attraction and it was then good to hear their experiences that night.

In the end it was a very successful model to follow as we all saw different things and all had a great time (well we did, I shouldn't speak for others).

I think the best was being guided by 2 very able people, but not being regimented in any way.

It was a large group, 23 RV's so we caused a bit of a stir when ever we turned up on site for the night, and I wouldn't fancy organising a group that big.

We got a hotel for 2 days (I think that was so we didn't drive too soon after flying from London to Vancouver) and a welcome meal on arrival in Vancouver, and before flying home from Calgary we had a 'do' in Banff the day before the flight back home. These were all arranged before hand and included in the deal.

Yes in both tours lasting 3 weeks there were some excellent tours really well arranged, for example in Greece the bus they arranged pulled up at the changeling of the guard exactly on time, visited most things that you would want to do all included in the price. Quite a few meals were included, GB even provided maps of each country we travelled through.

GB Privilege http://www.gbprivilege.com/ do, JJ, as last weekend we were sited next door to a Hymer with a widower on board and he'd just come back from 3 weeks, getting to Switzerland, in S and returning from. He said the price included every attraction on offer and an awful lot of meals so although it's pricey, you do get to see and do all there is to see and do.

But it isn't compulsory - some things are automatic (so you pay for them even if you don't do them) and you can pick and choose which of the others you want.

I started GB Privilege many years ago and sold it last year. I therefore have probably got enough experience of this subject (from the other side) to answer any specific questions you may have.
I have now retired and have just spent about 3 months touring around Europe - which is what I hope to do every year from now on.
