Hi All,

After months of deliberation and a very expensive trip to Italy in a Nissan micra!!!! :ROFLMAO: With my 11 year old daughter and a dog...........

I am going to bite the bullet and buy a Hymer, looking for a Mercedes base and to spend around £10k-ish, due to spending so much on previous trip!

I have to drive an automatic and on a car licence so under 3.5.

I've got my eye on one, an S560 on ebay, but seems quite a few people are interested in it already.

Just wanted some advice as to whether anyone on here knows of anything for sale that would suit us. Looking to do longish European trips and Morocco for winter this year.

Any tips gratefully received!

Thanks.

From what I've seen around, you'll be very lucky to find one at £10k. Double it and you might have a bit more luck.

www.motorlands.co.uk outside Preston usually has quite a few Hymers. the occasional auto, but not at your budget.

Hope that helps....

Hi Wivvy's dad,

Well I can go a bit higher than that actually, but thanks for the tip - I shall have a look at the link.

Well it is possible though they are rare:

There is . that claims to be automatic, Mercedes - and in Germany for 7890 Euros. Mileage a bit high, but fine if it has been well maintained.

Buying in Germany on interim plates and insurance is not too bad, plenty of advice from people here who have done it (not me, bought mine 5 miles down the road where it had sat in a field for 5 years!). It's a dealer so they could do it all for you .............

Cheers

Oh that is the layout I prefer really with the lounge at the back, as my daughter and I can both loll about of an evening!

The other one I saw here is this one Link Removed

Which seems to be better equipped, with obviously much lower mileage.

Any advice please?

Thanks.

If you get it for near the price asked it looks reasonable, more modern and less mileage than the German one.

Still worth seeing first: Look for condition, that all the appliances work, check for damp etc. Or if not you a friend at least! Otherwise it would be a gamble.

Looks like the slide out scooter rack at the back. You'd only have two belted seats at the front so it would only suit two people. You can see the layout at the end of this page on my blog.

He does seem a bit vague on the weight, I think it should be 3200 maximum. It will be on a plaque above the engine at the front. It is on a 310D base which means it has only 4 wheels, unlike the bigger S660 and S700 on a 410D which have 6 tyres (twins at the back). It will be slow but will get anywhere! Road tax will be as a PLG at £220 a year.

That's about it for now I can think of! There is a really good specialist for old Hymers who can sort things out, Link Removed in Preston.

Cheers

Thanks so much for your help! I'm a bit stuck really because I can't get down to Oxfordshire to have a look before bidding, (I'm near Dundee) so it's only by taking a real gamble without seeing it and hoping for the best.

Problems, problems! ::bigsmile:

The AA or RAC will do it for the base vehicle, at a price. But they will not test for damp or things in the habitation like working fittings. That is a risk you'll have to take! You could Google for motorhome/ caravan dealers to near the sellers and ring them to see if they would do a check for you, but of course it would be up-front money without any assurance you'd win the auction.

Maybe some kind soul on the forum nearby in Oxfordshire could volunteer on a no-fault basis? Think that is all I can do to help, as I'm some distance away as well.....

Cheers

Thanks again. It's damp really that I would be most concerned about. I will do a new post to ask, perhaps someone is nearby and would know better than me anyway, what to look for!

Not long enough!
Hymer auto

Hi, I see that there is only a diner, so nowhere to lounge about.
If you want a rear lounge, stick to your original layout and wait till one comes up for sale.

Dont rush your purchase, as you may regret the layout that you bought.

Always get it checked out by a proffesional. It may be money down the drain if the van is no good, and too much of a gamble to buy without checking.
There are people out there who would think nothing of ripping you off!

Good luck ::bigsmile:

Thanks Theonlysue, I just wondered whether it might be feasible to change the layout around, but I guess you are right, (exactly what my 11 year old daughter told me!) I just want to get down to the Sunshine and on the move, and there aren't many automatics unfortunately!

I know it's good advice though.

However, I have asked the seller for more photo's twice and he hasn't replied to me, so not perhaps quite as transparent as he claims in his advert.

Thanks again!

I agree with Sue ref the seats and nowhere to lounge.. It's always great when you are somewhere sunny but just think when it is cold or raining.. Can you be happy and comfortable in the space and seats that you will have..

As mentioned Weight needs to be checked.. The seller does not state what the gross weight is.. If 3500 then you may be ok.. 3200 and a definate problem.. PLUS they are saying it was weighed without the rack on the back.. That will add quite a bit..

Take your time. Research models that you definetly like and get a feel for the prices they go for.. Remember that £9k is a starting auction price, may go for quiet a bit more if people are serious on it..

Good luck... Maybe see you in Morocco :thumb:

Think i've found the one!

Just contacted Ikonic and they are shipping a Hymer Mercedes Auto S550 which I am going to view on the 17th October. It's 82,000 miles and in excellent condition for £15995, which is more than I wanted to spend but it's the layout I want, and for the mileage and condition, it's a 1994 model, the photo's look great.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the price?

I am really excited about it, and hopefully be able to attend a meet in November, prior to Morocco after Xmas.

I guess its worth whatever someone is prepared to pay, seems a little high for its age but then I am renowned for being tight.

Difficult to say isn't it? I appreciate they source the vans and drive them back and have to make money, but I thought it was a bit high too. Although it really is in excellent condition, so I guess you are paying for a van that you may never find yourself.

Hi Moho,

Thanks for that link - yes it looks fab, but the layout won't be any good for us lazy loungers! :ROFLMAO:

The one I have fallen in love with, I have some photo's of (below).
