I have a strange thingie on the roof of my 'new' (old) hymer. Fibreglass box, and inside a roof device that is either a very early aircon unit, or a ceiling mounted lawnmower. No idea how it works, if indeed it does. Maybe a re-humidifier? Thought to ask before exploring further.
Dave.

Perhaps a picture?

Could be an evaporative cooler, but you may need to work on the description.

I am willing to bet it is a Travel Cool 12 volt aircooler.

Don't you have vents etc and switches under it inside the van?

JJ

Whoops... sorry ... photo bit dark...

Well, you TRY and be serious!!

OK, its WHITE, with something like BLACK lawnmower blades at each end........That's inside. Outside it looks like one of those silly helmets that racing cyclists wear. A bit, anyway. The guy I bought the van off said it had pipes that led somewhere............The inside bit is halfway down the corridor, dead centre of the ceiling.

Maybe it is a dead racing cyclist??

Ok.

You should have a water container somewhere with a pump.

On the unit inside mine there is a pump switch (on/off) and a fan switch high/off/low and a blow air in or extract air out switch.

When you switch on the pump it draws water up from the tank, into the thingy on the roof where it soaks a filter like material. The surplus water returns to the tank so in effect water goes around and around. Choosing "air in" option and switching on fan will result in the unit sucking air in from the outside, over the evaporator, which cools it down, and into the van. You can direct the flow of cool air a bit by swivelling the vents.

It does not cool as much as a grown up air conditioner but it does lower the temperature quite a bit and is refreshing if you position yourself in the airflow.

The great thing about the system is it works on 12 volts and can be used when driving.

Don't forget to keep the water container topped up.

I reckon if you Google Trav L Cool you will find a full user manual and maintenance guide.
