brake light problems (1 Viewer)

All the brake lights on my swift sundance have suddenly all gone out, the bulbs are fine, the fuse is fine. Anyone any ideas as to what my problem is please?

Check the switch on the brake pedal!

I guess the next place to look is the actual brake light switch at the pedal make sure that the pedal is making contact

fuse problem with brake lights

Thanks for your replies, but now on closer inspection the fuse has blown, i have put new fuse in and brake lights come on for split second and then blew fuse again, please any ideas what could be my problem?

you've got a short cuircate somewhere on brake light wiring ie a bare wire touching metal or touching another wire

Sounds like you have a short in the circuit!
If your not familiar with a multitester it might be worth the £50 to get an auto electrician to look at it!

Check the circuit anywhere the wires move / chafe.

The switch area, as previously suggested, sounds a good area to start.

I'd remove both the bulbs and check the holders after that.

You really need a multimeter on the Bulb/switch side of the fuse mounting (with the fuse removed) + lead on fuse terminal and -ve on chassis using resistance reading.

With bulbs in , Get someone to operate the Brake switch/press the lever down.

You should see some resistance and not a full short circuit/zero ohms reading.

Try it with bulbs out.

With lever pressed you should see open circuit/infinity ohms reading.

If there's a reading check / move the wiring with the meter still on. If the reading fluctuates, you are in the area of the fault.Then a full visual should , hopefully find the problem.

This saves blowing loads of fuses and possibly causing damage to the wiring.
