I've been looking for a Hymer for some time now....this one ticks a number of boxes...

This is a Peugeot J5 (?) 1991 138k Miles....

Interior is basically sound and looks in good cond. Had a fabric recover 2-3 years ago @ £1000

It has a black water tank fitted - no cassette..
It has LPG - this was a self fit - any advice?
New exterior BBQ point (self fit) - any advice?

There is a lot of history there - but its not complete - it has had a lot of money spent on it by its original owner of 12 years....then passed through 5 people in 1-2 year periods.

Last year it had new timing belt, alternator, brakes, discs...£1200 of work. The current owner has done a lot of work himself, which appears to be a good standard. He has also made good some previous bodges!

Bad things;
  • Doesnt appear to be "double floor"? Was this an option?
  • No oven - is it hard to retro fit?
  • When started it blows black smoke for a few seconds then clears up
(the chap mentioned that it could be oil seals???)
  • Has a damp spot on the bottom right of window behind drivers seat (LHD) - this IS damp - about 6-7cms wide and 12cms long...."occurred in driving rain in some storm". The area is soft to the touch - now exterior damage?? I know this needs repairing and being pretty handy i am happy to tackle it if its feasible.....is it?
  • Rear window has damaged fly screen - how easy is it to get out and replace?
  • Has 4 leisure batts - 80-110ah with ONE 80w solar panel - more panels needed??

The price on this is £13995 - seems a bit high to me - i was thinking more around 11-12k for this age/mileage?

Anything I should know about the J5 - what, if any, are the gotchas?
Appreciate any and all feedback :thumb:

many many years! since I was a kid
having owned older vans in the past, im not a snob. however with such a high mileage and the damp, I would consider it an expensive mistake. better to save your money for something less used and in better shape. dont let the name hymer sway your common sense. if it was another make, would you still be keen?

anything is repairable, at a price! if you factor in the cost of repairs and add that to the purchase price, in my opinion, its just not worth it. could easily end up a money pit that youre constantly repairing.

its your money though and your decision:thumb:

started in a minivan 1970's when I could fit into it.
I agree,you are buying work.
have a look at other sites, autotrader has a 92 model for £14000 with no apparent work to be done,if you want an import try mobile.de,there are a few on there also.
good hunting and also its always best to ask advice if unsure

I think I remember JJ posting the name of a Hymer specialist that dealt with older vans and JJ said they knew them inside out maybe, he will be along to offer advice on where to look for one that seems a lot of money to me

if its the one on ebay...its a 2.5 TD...My sis had problems with a hymer a few years younger with damp on the same side .....it spread to the door...could not find where the water was coming in...I certainly would not buy it as there are many without the dreaded damp problems.

I presume it has power steering?

I hear you all!

I thought the damp would be an easy fix - its a small area so DIY job rather than a garage.

Its a shame really as the overall condition is really very good, only two small dings externally and lots of work already done e.g. engine, breaks, LPG, black tank etc.

Its suffering a few signs of its age - hardly surprising - but the damp thing bothers me (obviously) if its not an easy fix.

It looked like that window had been out at some point - there was a "kink" bottom left (looking from outside) , think kink had maybe cracked the ally skin - this corresponds to the small damp area inside.

Having bought a 1999 N+B with similar problems and with similar additional refinements, which I bought for considerable less than you are asking I can say the damp problem with the window can only be sorted PROPERLY by Hymer themselves and will result in you having to take it to Germany.
I can sympathise with our desire to buy this mh but believe me there are better A class motorhomes than this out there. As everyone else has said walk away the cost of repair added to the price of the vehicle will be a waste of money.

If after all this you are still keen to buy then the price needs to be well below £10K
