I'm a newbie.
Hi. Can anyone advise me how much I should expect to pay for the the fitting of a tow bar to my Compass Aventgarde 150?(2008 reg). I've been told by two fitters locally that because of the multitudinous variations of build, effectively tow bars are more or less bespoke. Prices quoted so far £650.00 to £750. Ta :Eeek:

I looked into this a few months ago-and gave up the idea ::bigsmile:
It wasn't the cost, but the weight that would be added to the rear end-around 50kg !!

Mine comes from Link Removed I have the bill for it somewhere ill dig it out, but if you are only going to use it for a bike rack it would only have to be a light one and you wouldn't want lights which add quite a bit to the price of fitting, plus if you have a full width one it makes a very efficient bumper to save you body and lights::bigsmile:

if youre prepared to travel to get it done prices vary from around £300 for a basic towbar up to over £1000 for a combined towbar and rear protection bar. if you live in a remote corner of the uk you will find that you will be asked to pay a premium.

however any local welder/fabricator can build and fit a towbar to a motorhome registered before 2012. after 2012 they need to be type approved so generally cost more if even available.

vans with an alko chassis, there is a generic bar available on ebay for about £400. you need to be careful with fitting bars to alko chassis as the galvanised chassis cant be drilled or welded

alko kober themselves. drilling or welding the galvanised chassis will weaken it and cause it to rust. invalidates the warranty too

as you probably know its possible to weld gavanised steel but its a specialised process. however the chassis rails used by alko are very thin and get their strength from the pressed profiles. look up welding galvanised alko chassis you may find it enlightening:thumb:

I would recommend PWS in Poole. Towbars are not cheap and if yours is a newish van it needs to be a certain type. If you tow regularly go for. Really good make, we have used PWs for both our vans, excellent company.

Tow bar cost

Wanting a tow bar fitted to a new motorhome or one not very old might be subject to type approval. How it would affect a future Mot if one was fitted that hadn't type approval would be interesting to know. Does anyone know anything about the legalities?

after 2012 towbars must be type approved and have the data plate on it to prove its genuine. otherwise its an MOT fail as well as a big problem if stopped and inspected by VOSA

got a quote from PWS last year when I needed a bar on this van and they quoted minimum £1200 but got it done for £350 by a specialist just down the road from them
