Is the cig socket meant to get hot if I am running a coolbox and a satnav off of it?
The contacts are clean both sides, the plug fits in properly and makes a good contact.
If I pull it out after 5 mins the plug is very hot.:Eeek:

I would assume the coolbox is drawing a lot of current, doubt its the sat nav

Agree, cool box could be taking a lot of power, check the wattage..
A lot of cigarette sockets are limited to 120w..

I've had this with just a mobile phone charger. It turned out that the plug was not fully home and was sparking to make contact. Joan said she could hear a buzzing noise that I couldn't but when I touched it, the socket and plug were hot.

When I had a good look at the charger it did not have a spring to push the centre contact down to the centre contact. It looked identical to other plugs I have used in the past. I had recently purchased it from an online firm but was obviously sub standard.

I bough another from Maplin and it works fine in the same socket.

Tested the coolbox in a car , and works ok.

Seems the problem was with the Halfords multi socket adaptor, the plug from it seems to have a low rated fuse which seems to heat up when used.
Off tomorrow to get a beefed up adaptor:thumb:

Have a look inside the plug there is possibly a fuse inside it which may have some corrosion on it - if so remove it and clean it both ends and possibly use a very small amount of Vaseline to stop further corrosion

Cigarette lighter socket/plugs are electrically/mechanically RUBBISH!!

Supposed to be good for 10-Amps ... more like 3-Amp at best!

Seriously look at something better!

Hella socket, a full/proper 16A.

Anderson PowerPole (excellent) 35A.

Direct connection to the battery ... +++A.

Good luck!

I use Hella after melting a 10amp fag lighter type sockets running an LCD 22" tv and a 12v sat receiver through a dual adaptor.
adaptor got so hot it melted the fag lighter socket.

now have separate 16a Hella sockets
