Hi

I'm trying to find out if my Comfort insurance policy for windscreen cover can be used if it fails it's MOT on the basis that it has a chip within the drivers side, wiper area..

The motorhome has passed its last 3 MOT's with the same chip, but this time a I have replaced the wiper blade and it is slightly longer than the old one, the chip is now within the wiper blade area, albeit only just.

Has anyone any experience of this or advice please?

Ta in advance for any responses..

Buy a smaller wiper blade, a lot cheaper than a windscreen!"

why dont you just get the chip repaired ?

doesnt cost anything and doesnt affect your NCB.

there are size limits and positions for chips in screens....size of a £2 coin is the biggest.

if its in the drivers line of vision it cant be more than 10mm across.

windscreen wiper swept area has nothing to do with the drivers view area....as shown in the clip.

Peter

This is a solution ive been pondering, but I wouldn't mind paying the excess on policy to have a windscreen with no chip.. although costing more, I would have thought resale value of motorhome would increase by the excess amount.

Interesting to know your thoughts re that bit Peter.....

Interestingly, I had just looked at that video before first posting. It is in drivers line of vision albeit right at the bottom in Zone A... I've just been out to measure it and appears to be more than 10mm across, more like 18mm..

get somebody out to repair the chip, if it cant be repaired they will put a new screen in it, no point paying the windscreen excess for nothing. I have had a chip in my windscreen since i bought the van last year, I finally got around to asking autoglass about it I was told they would not repair one that old due to dirt ingress and if it hasnt gotten worse just leave it.

The damage as shown is both an MoT failure and outside the repair criteria.
A new screen is your only option:thumb:
When you call tell them both facts and they will turn up with a new screen

To answer your question correctly NO the windscreen insurance wont pay out for an MoT failure
They are and will pay out for the damaged screen
if its a MoT failure or not the damage needs repairing, Not many folk realise just how high a % Undamaged glass represents in structural terms of a vehicle, damaged glass is a serious weakness

From Peters point of view a good screen wont improve a sale value, but a damaged screen will detract from a sale value:thumb:

Glass replacement usually costs about £70 and the insurance pays the rest, and as said, no loss of NCB. If you have an RV, you need to check your policy tho. My mate has an RV similar to mine, and a replacement screen is £2500, which is when he found out the insurance policy only covers up to £1000.

Busy? I would have thought bad weather would drum up more business. Who knows?
