The last time we went to Skye we crossed at the bridge at Lochalsh. We are considering taking the ferry from Mallaig to Ardvasar. Does any one have any experience of this crossing? Is it suitable for a 7.5 metre motorhome and what is the scenery like in the south of Skye and the roads! and any recommended sites? Many thanks

Hi, thought you might have got a few replies to this, but sometimes that happens!

Last April we did Skye after a tour round from the East. We crossed at the bridge but then came back via the ferry and glad we did. The view of the Cuillins en route to the ferry was worth the trip alone. Our van is a Hymer A Class, 6.5m long, but with the 4 bike rack out (as was the case on this trip) it is 7.5m. The ferry crossing is not long (less than one hour from memory) but you will have no problem with your van, as they take all vehicles and the only limiting factor is when it is full! We got to the ferry point a good hour before the next one was due and after paying the fee, just sat at the cafe 25 yards away admiring the view. Our van was first on. The whole of Skye is fantastic and we stayed 3 nights at the club site. There is only one but I can't remember the name of it. It is right alongside a loch with stunning views. Whilst there we visited Dunvegan castle (worth a visit) and then took the van just up e road pt the castle to walk to the fabulous coral beach. There is a car park and if you are fortunate, it won't be full! We will go back to Skye probably next year. If I can locate the photos of our trip on our laptop I will put them on this site.

We visit Skye most years. The C&CC club site is really good but there is another nice site at Dunvegan, and if you don't need power there are loads of places to park up. Beautiful island, try a drive up round the north coast. Another site at Uig is useful if you are waiting for a ferry. Hope the weather is good for you, a number of times we have got to Kyle of Lochalsh and just turned around, couldn't see the island, but we have been going for over thirty years now.

If you are visiting Skye, try and leave a few days and go to the north of Scotland. Travel to Ulllapool then north to Durness, some of the best scenery, great pub in Kylesku and able to park up overnight in the village car park. Walking is great in the area and the boat trip around the Loch at Kylesku worth taking at the right time of year.
Only warning is that from mid June the midges are fierce as is the case in most of the Highlands so May or September are good months to visit.
