Our van is the first we have had with an awning (Omnistor), I have a tie down strap but have seen a couple of ways to use it. Some seem to put it over the extending arms but under the canvas, others put it over the canvas. Is there a preferred way to use it or is one as good as the other.

cheers John

If it is the long strap type, then under the awning and over the arms.

If it is the two strap type, then slot the end into the front of the awning edge

Thanks Peter, its the long strap, I thought that would be best as I think it would wear the canvas if over the top.

the best way to attach a long strap is under the canopy, but be aware that in strongish winds this puts a lot of pressure on the leg pivots. for about £16 you could buy the straps designed for canopy awnings, that allow you to disconnect easily and put the awning away.

have seen a few canopy awnings like fiamma and omnistor flipped onto the roof of motorhomes in what can only be described as moderate winds. the worst weather for damaging them is gusts of wind. you can try tying it down all you like but a 4m x 2.5m sail takes a whole lot of holding down

as said the knuckle joints at the top of the legs take a real beating when the awning is strapped down too tight....I know 'cos i broke one..

if yours has plastic knuckle joints consider replacing them with aluminium ones.
