I'm not sure how accurate this site is. The developers claim its as accurate as the sun index and pollen count! They also offer an app for iPhones, which includes midge levels on a 1 - 5 scale throughout Scotland

http://www.midgeforecast.co.uk/home

They also have a twitter feed @midgeforecast Although sadly they don't fully understand social media and seem to want to push their "Smidge" insect repellant, which is the wrong way to go about it.

Thanks, that looks like it could be useful as we plan our short tour in the next couple of weeks.

Buy avon skin so soft to help keep the little bliters at bay.

Note made.

From the looks of your avatar you're not far from my son who's at uni in Desperate Dan's city. ::bigsmile:

We're heading up there to pick him up and tour a bit for a few days at the end of this month.

You never know, a mini-meet could always happen - and of course we're hoping to pick up a few new hosts ourselves!

I believe it's Margaret's highland gathering at the end of the month, but not sure we'll manage to get all the way up there before we have to turn round and head back south for the start of the next school half term!

So it may just be mid-Scotland for us this time.

My son works as an ecologist here in the Scottish Highlands and is on the hill virtually every day of the year. Until a couple of years ago, we all used Skin-so-soft, and it is quite effective, though a bit greasy. He has started using "Smidge" and he simply will not use anything else now.....Highly recommended!

Some feedback from the guys at the Midge Forecast. They will resume live tweeting of forecasts from the 20th May, which is when their season starts. They seem confident in their data and ability to predict. Could be a good tool.

We got home on Sunday from the Highlands and won't be going back until late September or even early October depending on the weather. Get enough of the blighters at home here in the south!

Lived in Europe for 20 years and 5 of them in Split Croatia, right on the coastline:thumb:

Garlic garlic garlic is the way we kept them at bay (plus the vampires!!):winky: the locals put it in the baby food and everything else they could. Good job I love the stuff and so does SWMBO so we're lucky as the little blighters go and eat everyone else and leave us alone::bigsmile:

Not everyone's flavour or fave nibble, but those that do try it as its healthy for the heart too:thumb: pongs a bit but ::bigsmile:

This thread had me searching Google for the forecast of Mosquitos for the entire UK and it all looks depressing, so guess its either repellent, garlic, cover up and pull down the bug nets on the open windows, or go somewhere windy so the little blighters can't fly :Eeek::Eeek:

From todays Scottish Herald:
Cold spring delays midges

Wednesday 15 May 2013

The cold spring has delayed the dreaded return of the Highland midge.

But a leading expert is predicting that, despite the late hatch, there will soon be a population explosion of the pest.
Dr Alison Blackwell, director of Advanced Pest Solutions of Edinburgh, said: "It has been so cold that we have had very few reports of any midges. Only now there have been the odd one or two being spotted.

"The main first hatch usually comes in May, but we have had reports in previous years – when it was warmer – of people even being bitten in late March."
Dr Blackwell added: "The cold weather has slowed them down emerging this year but they will hatch with a vengeance once it warms up. They like it wet and warm – so far we have had the wet but not the warm. When that changes watch out."
The Scottish tourism industry is estimated to lose about £286 million a year because of the voracious insects, found Edinburgh University. A previous study also found that many tourists said they would not return to Scotland because of culicoides impunctatus – the tiny Highland midge.

The company doing this forecast have relaunched their website this morning. Glencoe and Thurso scoring a 3/5 on midge levels.
