I have come to the conclusion i cant afford to buy a car/trailer combination, so looking at the 2 wheeled option...

As a former biker my first thought was bike....but from a more practical cost to buy and run, it would seem a scooter would be better...

So...what two wheeled transport do you use?

On the MH a pair of electric push bikes. I don't want to tow and that's all the weight we can carry.

I did find a 100kg 100cc bike on ebay, £1000 new. That's the closest I've got to a proper 2 wheel solution.

But the electric bikes are real fun, you can ride them in pedestrian areas, along the sea front, can't do that with a motor.

Since April 1846 but have always camped.
I keep a 125cc Honda on the back. We used to have push bikes on the back but my wife kept falling of hers not sure if I understand her reasoning as now she can fall of the Honda but at greater speed!

It all depends on how far you intend to travel on your bike/scooter. If you only want to travel locally like to the shops or sea front then bikes (electric or otherwise are adequate. If you're looking at about 30 miles or so then a scooter would suffice. If you are like us, then we like to explore the area that we are in and quite often will do trips of 50-60 miles each way then it has to be a bike, and a reasonably large one at that. For instance this year we will be staying at Estartit and I will pop down to the MotoGP at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona which is about 80 miles away. Horses for courses I'm afraid.

We carry a 650cc Kawasaki Versys in the garage and a couple of push bikes on the back. Best of both then Versys for touring up to a 100 miles each way and the push bikes for local, shops and a bit of exercise. Don't like scooters personally and anything over 50cc seems too bulky and heavy for what you get.

We have had various bikes over the years but find it more relaxing but still fun with modern scooters, we used to have one each but as we've now got a Smart car we've sold one and are now selling the other ... just in case you're interested!

Caravaning / boating / motorhoming for 20+ years
Last year we had push bikes on back of our motorhome, but found that a mile or two was the furthest we wanted / could travel, especially on narrow country roads where cars struggled to overtake us. So we thought about a scooter, but our old motorhome could not take the extra weight, even with uprating the suspension through sv-tech (100kg scooter + 30kg tow bar + 30 kg rack = about 250kg extra weight on the rear axle depending on overhang), so started looking at motorhomes that could take the extra weight. We now have a Bessacarr E480 (swift 480G) with garage and purchased a Honda vision 110 (110cc, 105kg with room for 2 x helmets with top box). This year we have already done 200+ miles on the scooter from the motorhome. We find it great for getting about within about 15 miles of the motorhome and even further if the roads and weather are suitable. Easy to get into and out of the garage with folding aluminium ramps (£45 eBay). With both of us on the scooter (26 stone) we can scoot along at 50mph easily on the flat, but often can only get 40 uphill.

Ive got a 1975 Honda chaly like the old monkey bike! 72 cc is very small and compact and goes easily on a rack (light too) underneath the bike carrier.
its small and is great fun to ride. Also too small to take the wife for a crafty beer!!

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
We have a Honda 125PCX comes in at 120kg. Takes about 10 minutes to remove from scooter rack and go ( removing ties, padlock etc ) and about the same time back on.
MH with bike, two up, full tank, food, chairs loaded with clothes and some water 3480kg, so happy with that. Costs 2 euros road tax and 45 euros for insurance........

Agree with this,we use the bike for exploring 100 mile radius, used to have Harley V rod but now have Triumph street triple, easier to manoeuvre and more fun when the roads get twisty we carry it on Van vossen collapsible trailer.

We also have Honda Vision 110cc on rack, great little scooter and gives us so much more freedom as we are not having to rely on buses etc, and we are able to carry a fair amount of shopping on it.
