I've got a small pure sine wave which I use to run delicate stuff when off EHU and was looking at something substantial like 1600W upwards to boil a kettle when pulled into a layby. As I've posted on other threads what we have now was installed to run the roof aircon whilst in motion as well as on EHU and comes in handy for the odd brew when on the road but that will stay on the Autocruise. :Blush:

There's some seriously expensive stuff from Roadpro which seems OTT so question is will this sort of [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Modified-Power-Inverter-Output-Frequency/dp/B00ANDNWKY/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1367503945&sr=8-7&keywords=12v+inverter"]cheapy[/ame] thing do what I want, or[ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-444658-2000W-Inverter/dp/B002QRWHBK/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1367503945&sr=8-11&keywords=12v+inverter"] this[/ame]?

Anything, the right wattage, will run a kettle. The question is will your batteries take it ?

Numbers are something like 3 mins and 3000 watts. So 3 * 3000 / 60 watt/hours = 150 watt/hrs.

watts / volts = amps so for 12V 150 / 12 = 12.5 Amp/hr. That looks doable.

There is a gotcha. Your 110 A/h battery ( or whatever ) delivers this when taking something like 10A. 3000W will be taking 250 amps. The battery will be rated at more like 50A/h with these currents.

What's wrong with your gas ?

Do you really want an inverter just to boil a kettle - or have you got some other uses for it in mind?

Try looking at ring pure sinewave inverters very good quality for very little cash. less than £400 for a 2100 watt continuos 12 hour, with a peak performance of 4200 watt..

I generally leave the engine running for the short time the kettle's on so no problem with the batteries and nothing wrong with gas except I might have to get out in the rain to turn it on! Ok, ok, I've read the thread about "do you leave your gas on", plus we have to separate the hob from its anti rattle wrapping, and there's more, I may have to be a tad sparing with it when we're off abroad. I can see a gaslow thread emerging again. oh: Other uses? Nothing particular at the moment but I like the old maxim of if you're gonna buy something it's best to buy bigger than you think. I can see you've talked me out of it already. :Blush:

And I didn't even say it does not do your batteries and great favours drawing that much current.

Gas is perfect for heat.

Electricity is for gadgets and moving things.
