I need to identify which of the various options of geabox I have fitted to my mh.

It is a pre face lift ( so either 2005 or 2006 would be a safe bet even though it is on an 07 plate ) 2.8 Peugeot boxer

I have searched the geabox for ID marks and searched the web for info as to where it might be located.. So far both searches are conspicuous only by their complete failure !!

Anyone know where the id can be found

Got this from another forum
The gearbox has a code on it you need to have a look at that the chassis number does not realy help gearbox code is 6 digits etched into the main case

This was another suggestion

hi ,you should phone your local peugeot dealer and ask the parts department for the gearbox code ,they will need the vin number.

Anndddddd.. back to square one

Got all excited then but that picture is completely different to my box.. The 5th speed cover is about half the size and yes, you guessed it, absolutely nothing on it !!!

However.........................

Just had a call back from Pug who have now traced the vin number, and they gave me the OEM part number
2052Y1

Still not a whole lot of help as no one seems able to cross reference it !!

Beat me to it. I just had to find it on mine as I need a new one as well (still)

I waited until the lads had mine up on the lift at the garage doing some other work and wandered under and found it on the round bit next to the cross brace.
I could give more direction but no point as you already have it.

Very hard to read as it had been stamped in not on a plate...

copied from another forum might be usefull (oil quantity)

This is going to be a bit long winded and i apologise in advance.

I have a 2006 Peugeot Boxer 2.8 HDi based Motorhome and i need some info about the Gearbox please.

From new i suffered with a really stiff Gear Change especially if the vehicle had not been used for a while and after numerous attempts by the dealer at cleaning and lubricating the cables someone told me to change the Oil and it worked a treat.

I`m about to change the Gear Oil again and i`m getting conflicting info from different dealers about how much oil to re-fill it with.

I already know that it is filled with a measured quantity though the breather on top of the casing

The first time i changed it i looked in the manual and i couldn`t find a quantity so i rang the dealer that had done the PDI and they told me 1.85 Litres which i wrote down in the manual and that`s what i used and it worked fine.

This time however the same dealer is now saying 2.7 Litres and others say different quantities as well.

I`ve now been told quantities ranging from 1.85 litres through to 2.7 Litres and one even told me to fill it right to the top !

Can someone please tell me if this is a " Model Number / Code " anywhere on the box ?

I have already found " 20UM05 and 6540901 " which are Punch Marked into the Diff casing but i wonder if there are anymore ?

I`m looking to find out if it is a " ML5T 5/1 or a MLGU5 5/1 or a MLUC 5/1 " ?

I know that the different boxes use different amounts of Gear Oil and i`m concerned that it`s been " Under filled " for the past 4 years.

I`ve E-mailed Peugeot who just send me a link to the User Manual which i already have and does not show the info i need.

I`ve had the Motorhome from new and so have all the manuals paperwork etc. and it is parked at the side of my house so is easy to look for more info.

I`ve already asked this question on a couple of Motorhome Forums but i`m just getting the usual " Ask the Dealer "or " Fill it up to the level plug " which it hasn`t got.

I would be very grateful if anyone could throw some light on this.

Thank You Very Much.

the reply he got was

these gearboxes suffer from lack of lubrication especialy on the 5th gears.
i have rebuilt quite a few of these boxes and always fill them with 2.7 lts of oil
it does not matter which model it is as they all use the same size rear gearbox casing and diff housing. 1.87 lts would lead to problems with the gears especialy on motorway journeys due to overheating the oil

Thank you for your enquiry. Please indicate what type of gearbox is fitted to your vehicle

The question asked was how to identify a gear box.. nothing more..
Sorry if I mislead you or lead you to believe I was after how much oil went in a box ( ??????? )

Many thanks to all who offered info and help :thumb:

Info now got

Pug main stealer ended up being pretty helpful.. Although to start with there was some doubt, they eventually got back to me having cross referenced the VIN number with their Italian counterparts ( talk about go the extra mile for a customer ) and came up with not the type of box but the part number for the clutch kit ..

Armed with that a chap on the BIRD forum who works in commercial van place dug around and came up with after market part numbers ( Local parts factors could not find ANY sort of match to the OEM numbers )

For anyone else with the same box here is the required numbers :

If you have an OEM clutch that is part number 2052Y1 the Pug price is £389.40 ( that is JUST the clutch kit, quoted price for the job was £1040 !!! )

There is a Valeo option, part number 826264 ( unknown price at the moment )

Also a LUK part number, LUK 624316500, which seems to average £190

I originally wanted to fit some sort of heavy duty option but no one makes one..

After speaking at length to the pug people, it seems I am destined to fit a new clutch every 35000 miles or so .. The chap said that was bang on the average mileage for a boxer chassis with 4t body on it :Eeek:

Well you certainly made hard work finding a clutch, we'd get one job out a week at that rate:Doh:
"Proper " Motor factors data base work very well from the reg No, why was yours so difficult,
I ask not from a mocking point of view, but need to know if there is a rouge oddball we should know about, if you want to experiment pm me your reg and let me see what pops up
Ps as an aside
I would add it is very very rare for us to aproach main dealers for info, main reason, is the parts dept is so highly specialised no one in there speaks mechanic.
They can tell you what the number is and where it is stored, but have no idea what it looks like or where it fits
as for tech questions like gearbox ratios etc the stock asnswer, "have you got a part No"

Yup, I agree with every word you said Geo..

I started off going to two local factors with both vin and reg numbers.. BOTH said they could not help.. I then tried a couple of on line suppliers and they came came the same.. With four options !!

Soooooooooo

With that in mind I then started to go round the houses so to speak !

OK, see what you get with the reg number Geo.. See if you get a geabox type come up at all..

I wait with baited breath :thumb:

Very frustrating for you John. I needed a crank shaft sensor for my car.
The local Vauxhall dealer using the reg. asked was it a 2.5 V6? no it's a 2.0 Ecotech.
They tried VIN, same again, it's 2.5 V6.
In the end, asked for a crank sensor for a 20 XEV Ecotech.

And as an aside, the gearbox reference on a Seat can be found under the carpet on the nearside of the BOOT!:Eeek:

possible help

If you follow the link which apears broken and click on the link given it redirects you to the site choose the country you want it also offers a total replacement doing away with the mass clutch that gives so many problems peugeot and citren usually are the same items but usually cheaper ffor some reason they may guide you on which clutch you have.

Just came across it may be of use

Yup, dumping the mass clutch in favour of a standard unit.. Never know, it might last a bit longer too !! ::bigsmile:

John, Pug dealer quoted 9 hours so do not think it is too far off..

Got the Russian lads round the back of me to do it.. £2 to £300 tops..

Will report how it all goes when it gets done ( proly be next week sometime )
