This little aire is a real gem if no one already knows it
Especially useful for any first timers to France that perhaps are nervous about using aires for the first time or for that matter driving on the continent. It is a nice one hour drive from the Calais port or chunnel.

It is in the aires book as Embry N 50 deg 29.717 min E001 deg 57.953 mins and costs 6 euros per night It has a beautiful picnic area, first class toilets showers large enough for both of you to use at once, for 1 Jetton, available from a machine on site, and views to die for with deer in the distance and lots of bird life

The washroom and showers have sachets of shampoo etc just like a posh hotel

Just one word of warning make sure you have sufficient food on board as there are no shops around or bars for that matter.

Oh and another if you have a long overhang enter off the metalled road with a little care

Thanks very much for that. We arrive in France 3pm Monday afternoon so this looks like it will be our first stop:thumb::thumb:

gem of an aire

We've used Embry - last time last year. Has pretty views and beautifully laid out. When we were there the lady owner came around early n the morning and left baguettes you could pay for the night before. If raining she left it under the van rather than wake you up.

The village is pleasant to walk around although there is nothing there.

It's a little off the beaten track (unless our satnav had a mini breakdown which has been known to happen). We're trying Baie de Somme for the first time this summer. That's also about an hour from Calais.

You do know Baie de somme is an motorway service area.. ! We have stayed there many times. In summer you can go down the rear of the site where there are picnic and caravan / motorhome parking places. In Winter we always stay up near the main building..

Not everyone's choice but we find it a handy stop..

Is it open all year?

We tend to go to France in September/October on route to Spain and return in April/May.

Thanks for that. Yes, we know it's a motorway stop but sounds like one of the better ones. It's just for an overnight on our way down the west side of France (as far as midi Pyrenees). Plan to hurry down and come very slowly back zigzagging about a bit. Any suggestions of good aires?

Arques

We were there in late September and toilets and showers were closed but Dominique (who is a very pleasant lady) would probably open them up for you.

We stayed at Embry last September, great facility though the service point can be a little temperamental, the breakfast complete with home made jam is highly recommended.

The turn in is quite sharp on a blind bend and it is easy to ground if you have an overhang, I believe keeping over to the right on the way in is best, I didn't

Thanks for the Embry tip.

While this thread's active, I've just updated my mapped photo gallery with a panoramic shot of the Aire at Sarlat-la-Caneda in Dordogne. Not what you'd call a gem of an aire, but certainly handy for exploring the medieval town.

We visited other smaller aires and MH parking areas (Port des Barques, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Roche Saint-Christophe, Saint-Cyprien), but it's not my policy to photo-map small aires in Google Earth/Maps as I don't want to encourage over-crowding. Plus part of the fun is finding them out.
