We are in France and can't find the description for a sign on the side of roads that is square with a blue car in it and sometimes a red line going through it mostly at the entrance and leaving major roads.
Can anyone tell us what they mean please?

I think it means, Limited Access Road. Meaning that there will not be access from this road to private properties etc.

Like a Dual Carriage Way or Express Way.

That's what we thought but cars are on the road where the red line goes through it, it's a blue sign by the way with A. white car inside the square.

That's the one Mel.
By limited access I hope you don't mean we can't use it because we see Lorries and cars on it.
We being 4 ton?

Here it is.

Clear as mud as there doesn't appear to be a sign that says Automobiles Only Zone.

You will find these on most dual carriage ways.....so no problem....

I think Itinerant Pete has it correct..
Limited Access Road. Meaning that there will not be access from this road to private properties etc.
keep your horse and cart , Bicycles, tractors off ...Automobiles Only Zone

and the photo with the red line through PPete has put on is when you come the end of the road back onto a normal road access permissible

if ever there was a weight problem on any road you will see a sign with the axle or village limit

Got it, I think.:roflmto:

White car means Start of Highway, other than Autoroute, only for Motor Vehicles.

So white car with line through it means (you've guessed it) End of ......... etc.

My understanding of it is that only cars may use the overtaking lane on these roads?

Not so I'm afraid - earlier posters have got it right. Here is a translation from the official French road sign guide:

Route with limited access. This signal announces the beginning of a section of road other than a motorway, reserved for the motor vehicle traffic on which the rules of circulation are the same ones as those prescribed with the articles R.412-8, R.417- 10,R .421-2 (except for 9°), R.421-4 with R.421-7, R.432-1, R.432-3, R.432-5, R.432-7 and R.433-4 of the highway code and on which, unless otherwise specified, the maximum speed of the vehicles is fixed at 110 km/h.

And the sign with a line through marks the end of the motor vehicle-only section.

You'll most likely see this sign on French motorways where they are doing roadworks and the lanes split into a narrower lane for cars and a wider one for trucks etc... So the sign means - limited access for cars only, in other words go down with your bus and you might get stuck!!!!!!!
