People did actually used to do that Phil or paint them which is not good as their shells do absorb stuffs.

workmate found his tortoise in the loft after hibernation, some 10 yrs when they were about to move house. they forgot all about him.
I could not understand why so long as when spring/summer approaches strawberries are our ones favourite and we always are alerted to save food for Tommy, so not forgotten.
not all tortoises hibernate and they can survive buried under soil which is best for them in a box. not straw or paper.
