Hi all

Just had my windscreen go on Fiat Ducato 2009. Anybody replaced the screen paying for it themselves and not claiming through insurance. If so what is the going rate for the replacement

I googled this myself late last year.
Autoglass charged nearly £1000 to the insurance. Some indipendants were charging £300 ish

That's cheap. Might be tricky getting to Kent with a broken windscreen though!

May I ask why you do not wish to claim on your insurance?
It won't affect your no claims bonus and ypu'll only have to pay the excess - in our case that was £100.

I think my excess is the cost of the windscreen plus fitting :Eeek:

Windscreen excess is normally around £100 even if your main cover excess is more.

Normally windscreen excess will not affect future premiums.

Worth calling your insurer before doing anything about replacing it yourself.

My glass excess is set at £100.

VERY happy with that as a new HALF screen is probably in excess of £3000

I don't know why insurance companies get into bed with autoglass unless they have shares? costs are outrageous and often fitting is poor too

Thanks for the link to the Windscreen fitting service in Kent.

My Son needs a new windscreen for his work van and the excess is far more than the cost of this.

So thanks again as he was looking a sourcing one from a breakers and fitting it himself.

We've all got to wonder how much Autoglass costs us, on the basis they are tied closely ( free indscreen repair ) to our insurers.

I wonder if Shifty can tie in the directors of Autoglass and some of the big insurers !!!

re info about claiming on insurance re windscreen

I have had a windscreen go on my car claimed through the insurance and paid the excess. Yes it does not effect your no claims but you are still obliged to tell any insurance company that you have had a claim when shopping around rfor renewal . Not a problem at first as this initial claim does not make a difference to the quote . The problem arrises when you have another claim for something else, in my case I had storm damage to the motorhome, once you then inform that you have had two claims in five years either the company does not want to know or the premium is enormous.
I have spoken to all my insurance companies about this( i have two cars , scooter and MH and all say the same, it is a claim and must be declared, that is why I am looking to pay myself and not show a third claim on my insurance history.

All claims from all the insurance would are listed on the Insurance Fraud Bureau system. When taking out any insurance that search your details and cross match to your declared claim history. If they do not match they then cancel your insurance and then your next quotation you have to declare that you have insurance cancelled or declined, the hole just gets bigger and more costly.

Hope anyone out there can rebut my points but the insurance world are just out to get as much out of as all as possible.

I had to have the windscreen replaced on a 2007 Ducato just before we came away. Fast Fit came out to the store and charged £200. They came out to the store, were very efficient and did a good job. I didn't use insurance as I was in the process of renewing and didn't want to complicate matters.
