Tyre Pressures (1 Viewer)

Hi Guys

I just bought a CI Mizar GTL Living on a Fiat Ducato 2.8 JTD which is 2005. Apparently the tyre pressures are all set at 79 psi which just seems a lot to me?

Not sure what yours should be, it would be in the manual if you have one.
Without checking i think mine are around 64psi.
May have the pressures on the tyre sidewall.

Our FIAT has stickers for about 75 all round. These are heavy vehicles. I think the sidewall says "Max 80".

If you put normal van tyres on , do they have less pressure in them?

Depends upon the tyre make and your weight. I have Avons that they suggest I run around 65psi but the Michelins on the same van were at recommended 80psi

i had different pressures recommended in the handbook to the stickers on the door pillar so emailed the customer services of the tyre company ( continental in my case) with the axle weights and the full details of the tyres fitted and within 24 hours they emailed me back their recommended pressures. :thumb:

We have Michelin 225/65 R CP tyres and the recommended pressures in the Manual are Front 3.8 Bar (55 lbs) and Rear 4.4 bar (63 lbs)

These run very well with some warmth in the tyre after a long run, but not hot, and show no obvious sign of looking 'flat'.

It will depend on the weight of your Motorhome (3500 kgs?), what type of tyre and size you are using and the axle weight on front and rear.

This is typically what you should inflate to – Front axle 1850kg – 60psi / Rear axle 2120kg - 64psi – but that will still depend on the size and type of tyre.

What size wheel and tyre do you have?

Manufacturers usually recommend the highest tyre pressure that your tyres will safely take but this doesn't really work in the real world.

Over-inflated tyres are as bad as under-inflated tyres in that they both cause problems and you should have your tyres as near to the correct pressures as possible.

Try and ask at your local friendly Tyre depot, you must have bought tyres for your car/s before at a local dealer, and get their advice and help.

The pressures you have at the moment are as high as you're ever going to safely get on your MH and the people who sell tyres locally are the ones you should have a chat with.

The tyre pressures on your van and in your manual are usually maximum values and could give you an uncomfortable ride. Get your axles weighed and e-mail your tyre manufacturer, asking for their recommendations.

What is the weight on each wheel? That is the main determining factor, with the tyre construction having a smaller effect. 79psi sounds a bit high if you are under 3.5t, but still plausible. Most commercial wheels are rated to 80psi, but tyres are variable.

Mine are around 55psi with about 900 kg on each wheel (6 of them).

You can either look in the handbook, or calculate the wheel loading and look up the tables provided by the tyre manufacturer. Personally, I'd take the tyre manufacturer's suggestion over the vehicle's.

We've got Michelin 225x75x16 and put 80 psi all round, that's what Michelin recommend

The max pressure stated on my tyres is 68, I run them near this, yes it gives a harsh ride but better fuel economy, but remember on soft ground or snow you will need to run them with less pressure to get good grip, I recommend always carrying a handheld pressure meter so you can release pressure with going too far, you will be amazed how much more grip you get with lower pressure in the tyres when the going gets tough
