Hi Guys

Just a quickie. If a 6 berth motorhome has a smart car in tow traveling in Europe would this have much of an affect on the Motorhome engine.
I've been told that towing a car would put an unnecessary and detrimental strain on the Motorhomes engine. Although the van has done 30000 miles the wear and tear of towing a car is a problem
What do you guys think?

Thanks Gary

Depends on what engine and MH weight amongst other factors really but its more likely to put a strain on the smart transmission.

6 berth motorhome is already a big vehicle, do you have a ducato 2.3 engine, if so I would think it would put too much strain on the engine if towed around a lot, the 3.0 engine would be better

If it's a 3.0 litre engine and the Smart is on an A frame you won't even notice it, but don't take an A frame to Spain unless you want to have problems with the Guardia Civil.

As long as you put the Smart transmission into N, no problem.

You wouldn't notice a SmartCar behind a 2.3 motorhome. Smarts are light and have very little rolling resistance.

As long as you put the Smart transmission into N, BEFORE TURNING OFF THE IGNITION, no problem.

the auto box on some smarts is electrically controlled, so without ignition you select neutral on the shifter but nothing happens, it is still in drive

with ignition on, the electric solenoids select neutral then safe to turn off

I always start the Smart when in Neutral to ensure its safe to tow. Never had any problems!
