I am newish to motorhomes, had a Pilote A class for a while and loved it, just moved on to a 2009 Hymer S800, bought it privately from a seller who did not use it much and understood how it worked even less. Is anybody anywhere near Bolsover, Derbyshire, with knowledge of this model and time to spare, prepared to come to me for expenses and unlimited coffee, or me to come to them, with my Hymer, for a lesson in what does what, it is truly baffling.

Hi David, welcome to fun, keep a eye on the thread hopefully some one will be along who can give you some help.

It is a great van you have there, have you thought of coming to one of our meets, we have a good one at Chester at Easter, I am sure there would be enough Funsters there to give you all the help you could need. :welcomefunster:

hi

, you can get a lot of the hymer instructions on line now.
either Google search or try the hymer site.
for the individual components like fridge etc, try the manufactures site. orGoogle.
It is unusual for such a high value motorhome not to have any instructions, do you not have at all?

good luck and great choice of van :)))

Hi David,

Like Sue says, it's unusual for a MH so new not to come with instruction manuals. Hymer issue a large zipped wallet with all the manufacturer's handbooks inside, for the different appliances. If unable to locate it, just ask away in the Hymer thread. Broken Link Removed or in the Base Chassis Section, if mechanical, but "NOT" Hymer related. http://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/base-chassis-section/

There will always be someone about to help. It might take a couple of hours, or it might only take a couple of minutes to get a response to your questions.

Good luck. :thumb:

Thanks

Thanks for help so far, we do have a full set of instructions, mostly unread by previous owner we think, the sheer quantity of written data is daunting, not actually knowing which of the options we even have. A lot more reading to be done, although I have now fathomed a lot more than I had yesterday. We have the Alde wet heating system, this is new to us, but we also have a Truma Saphir, my mistake that I thought this was also a heater, now i realise it is only for cooling, the Alde system is suddenly so much more efficient!! A possible fault that one of you might now help with though, but I guess I might need to post this somewhere else, the kitchen tap appears not to work, but if left open and the bathroom tap turned on both taps then run. I presume that is only due to system pressure, if we then turn the kitchen tap on we get a few seconds of flow, then nothing and I can't hear the pump running. It also turned out that both leisure batteries are useless and only hold power if connected to mains, it is little wonder I could not get things to work, now got to debate gel or swap to lead acid batteries, more blogging needed I think, price diferecne is enormous. best regards to all David

Firstly the tap issue - probably a failed microswitch that sits in the base of the tap. They are available cheaply but a bit of a fiddle to replace. The taps are most likely made by Reich. The reason water comes out when you operate the shower tap is that this one's microswitch is working and so activates the pump which is able to deliver more than enough water for both taps at once.
Secondly, the batteries: sounds as though one or both of them has failed. From your description I assume you are getting some 12V power after charging rather than none? If you are getting none, check that the master switch on the Schaudt Electrobloc (EBL) is set to on (ein). If this is not the issue then suspect a dud battery. Whether or not to use gel may be a less critical issue than whether to buy good quality and hence pay more. A good lead-acid battery will cost over ÂŁ100 (e.g. Banner). If you switch from gel bear in mind two things: make sure you change the selector switch on the EBL to suit the battery type; if lead-acid, make sure they are vented to the outside.

Great motorhome by the way - I'm jealous!

Tap issue

I might have found another solution, the tap on this motorhome is a rather complicated pillar arrangement, more like something from the SS Enterprise, I have found out that the tap has to be clicked down into position before it works, I had released it from the vertical 'away' location and it drops down to about a 45 degree angle, I have been told that it needs to click down a bit lower to engage the switch, a safety feature in case it drops in transit, then the tap can't run. I need to be retired, I now want to go home to try this, but have to work first. I will update here if successful. What happened to a good old foot operated pump in my first recollection of a family holiday in a caravan?? Thanks for the input great to know there are such helpful types around still. David

Glad you are finding your way around the new van. There is a private dealer close to you in Mansfield Woodhouse that specialises in Hymer imports if you need parts or perhaps some advice. I realise you did not buy from them, but they might be prepared to help. We bought our Hymer from them in 2007 and found them very good to deal with. Edgehill Motorhomes is a family business run by Paul and Lee Broadhurst.

Perhaps the font of Hymer knowledge in the UK is Peter Hambilton - should you need any major work doing and don't fancy using one of the authorised agents. He can also get spares.

Not familiar with your model, but pretty clued up generally. Happy to pop over from Sheffield if you think a generalists scrutiny of your problems might help to shed light on how it all works.

 Oops, so did I. Welcome to Fun David. :thumb:

Having had work done by Peter Hambilton, I can recommend him and his colleagues. :thumb:

Don't worry too much David, as it will all come to you in time. The advise above from JeanLuc is spot on, especially the EBL and battery change over switch, ie, essentially crucial, for ensuring long battery life, and correct charging/conditioning.

Cheers for now,

Jock.

Mended tap

I am delighted to announce that with the help of a third party Hymer owner I have fixed my tap, it is, as I described earlier, a weird looking thing far to complicated for its own good. It appeared not to work, I could actually hear the microswitch clicking. What i had not done was to push the tap down fully, I was not keen to apply too much force to a plastic tap!! when pushed down it clicks into place and all works a treat. and a massive double bonus, a leak I had under my sink stopped with it, the water was running back down the tap and dropping through the pillar into the cupboard. I feel ready to take on the world now, not sure I am ready to cope with the alarm yet but the Alde system can get ready!! Happy days

David

Batteries

I have also made the decision to stick with gel batteries, just ordered 2 x G80 Exide with an on line discount for ÂŁ185 each free delivery, Hymer fit them for a reason and as they have stuck with them I am going to for this time at least. Many thanks for inspiration gained from readers of my plight, back to the books. David

I see you have used up your free posting allocation David - this forum is well worth the small annual registration fee in my opinion. Hope you become a fully paid-up 'Funster'; there is a wealth of useful information on here and loads of people to give advice (and opinion).

I was really struggling at the weekend, turns out most of my problems were battery related, now ordered 2 new ones, I will see how i get on with them but you may well still be needed, thanks for offering, there is so much technical to learn. David

A year on

What a difference a year makes, last February I made the biggest purchase of my life (outside of our house), through a mist of panic and confusion I found this site

The calming effect was mostly what I needed, then some technical input, followed by getting on with it

result is we now mostly understand our Hymer, love getting away and now have the confidence to inflict ourselves at the Chester Meet

Brace yourselves, I still have unresolved queries, but will bring enough red wine to talk through them all with any willing listeners / helpers :thumb:

Thank you all for the help and support offered and given

Ask away David. I'll willingly listen to your Hymer questions, and help if I can. :thumb: Oh yes, and I'm known to like a wee glass of the red vino de collapso too. :roflmto:

See you there.

I must say what a cracking advertisement for the forum this thread has been. Someone who bought a motorhome and didn't have much clue as to how it worked, he was then helped by members and joined because of this.

He is now attending a meet a year or so later all because of the helpful nature of members.

Brilliant way to encourage new members.

Paul.
