Hi - we are planning a trip to Spain  for May - June. Any tips on the best way to get there.
We are looking at travel from Portsmouth to Bilbao - then where to head west, east or south?

Looking for a scenic holiday with not too much driving, staying for a few days for R&R along the way.

Thanks for any tips advice.

Do it !!!!

Bilbao !! Turn right, go along the North coast of Spain then down the coast of Portugal !!
Make sure you stop off at Caminha on the border ! Typically Portuguese town, very relaxing !! :thumb::thumb::thumb:

Before Portugal, try touring around Galicia. Wonderful part of Spain, lovely beaches and green countryside. The coast level with Santiago de Compostela down to Vigo has a fjorded coastline. There are some campsites in the ACSI book but there are others.

In north Portugal, Orbitur Caminha as Steve has already said, is a lovely place to stay.

Have a look at boats to Santander as well as Bilbao as that will take you nearer to the south and west. Also timings are different. We use Santander and they now have a direct route to the port which makes it easy to get to and from.

We've also spent time in Asturias and Cantabria.

funny-----the OP asks about Spain and the replys direct them towards Portugal::bigsmile:---------we would agree::bigsmile:-----if it's wet in North Spain, keep going --and stop on the way back::bigsmile:-------the west coast of Spain/Portugal is really nice--and very easy for wild camping-----in fact-------ALL of Portugal is nice with easy attitude towards m/homers-----our favourite is small villages in the hills:winky:
There is a HUGE market in North East Portugal--if you do go in that area, check out the days its on--well worth the effort

OK, I can play that game.

If you turn left out of Bilbao you soon come to the magnificent Biarritz, then the magnificent Carcasonne then the lovely Argles Plage.

Bilbao is a good gateway to the south of France too.

We once did Bilbao-Bacelona-Argles Plage-Carcassone-Biarritz-Bilbao. Very satisfactory for a two week holiday by bike. If we'd know better we would have taken in Toledo and Aranujez.

The OP asks which way to go after landing at Bilbao !!:Cool::Cool:

And.......You eventually reach Southern Spain by a rather circuitous route !!:Eeek::Eeek::Eeek:

Aug 09 to date 9,000 miles!
Toledo is utterly fab I agree Brian - shouldn't have thought it was partic MH friendly though, (we were in cars when we went) it's fairly precipitous, very narrow cobbled streets (think .... Dinan, but far bigger - except the river virtually encircles Toledo and the Guadalquivir is a much bigger river than whatever the one is at the side/bottom of Dinan ) - but a lot further north west Avila is also fab, being an ancient walled city.

And the Picos de Europa .....

Just gerroff the motorway everywhere is what say I, unless you specifically want to get from A to B in a very short time, in which case it's fine!

Picos mountains

Depending on the weather Turn right out of Bilbao and go into the Picos mountains. Just keep your fingers crossed for good weather. :thumb::thumb:

Stunning.

We stayed there on our last bike trip to Spain. Coming from the south we saw this apparition in the distance. As if we were approaching the set of El Cid. It just got better and better until we were inside walking the walls.

The road to Potes....SCARY !!! a narrow road with stone overhangs on the cliff face on one side and a raging torrent on the other !:Eeek:

And maniacal truck drivers not giving enough room ! I spent a few days there ( a great place !) dreading the return journey !:Doh::Doh:

Challenging might be a good description

Yes we agree - I had about 500 cars behind me by the time we got to Potes. But only one way for us, we drove south out of the mountains to Burgos.

Same sort of road but as we were the only vehicle on it all day, so quite pleasant.

Make sure your tank is full as the mountain roads cause the consumption to drop almost to single figures. :thumb::Eeek::thumb::Eeek:
