I'm new to it
Has anyone been to Carnac and if so, where is the best place to see the standing stones .. and (perhaps crucially) is there a campsite nearby ?
any and all information gratefully received :)

We've been there fairly recently - it's a unique site if you're into your prehistory.

There's an aire in the town - mapped panoramic photo here (click photo for pan & zoom image)

The aire is within reasonable walking distance of the visitor's centre for the stones, but for seeing all the stones you'd be better off on bikes (if possible) as the alignments are spread out along a country road. I reckon the best views can be had by parking here (Google Maps 47.596346,-3.068029) next to the Kermario Alignment which I don't recall as being height restricted. You can't walk among the stones without taking a guided tour, which will be in French, but you can follow footpaths around the edges of the different alignments.

We were there last May.

We stayed at a site in Trinite Sur Mer can't recall the name but it was something Plage. I think there are only a few there so if you googled Trinite sur mer campsites it would probably come up. Nice site. About 100 Euros for a week I recall.

We had a car and drove to see the stones. They are so vast that there are many excellent viewing points and places to pull over and get out.

I had my tyres let down in Carnac, could have been worse I suppose, but something to bear in mind!

We were in Carnac this summer on the aire. It was quite busy and there was always at least one van waiting to get on. There is electric hookup for about 4 vans but am afraid the long termers hog it. Nice town though.

And it's so much easier to go to B&Q, buy a dozen breeze blocks, arrange them in a crude circle in your garden, have a large bandy or three and the experience is about the same.

Another 'underwhelmed' ..

but there is a nice aire and an adjacent municipal site on the Quibron Peninsula at Kerne, which is more interesting than the 'stones' and worthy of a couple of nights..

..which costs money. There's a lesser-known free aire at 47.52362,-3.146532 with a sandy beach (Port Blanc) close by.

If you enlarge one of those stones enough you'll see the faded text:

yes.. I know that aire .. had a look when we were there... but there is no sea view and not nearly as nice as the one at Kerne.. but if you want free.. it's ok.

if you plan to stay for a few days the municipal site at Kerne is very good, toilets with free hot showers and lovely large grassy pitches.. .. .. IIRC about €14 including leccy ,

Kerne Municipal Site ..

At least in this country we managed to finish building our stone walls and dykes.

I suppose they left the gaps so the next invaders have easy access to get past........:winky:

I can't see how they were underwhelming and disappointing, unless you weren't really interested in them in the first place; in which case, why bother going to see them? ;-)

They are certainly more spectacular than the offerings in this country such as Stonehenge, Avebury or Calanais!

I thought the stones were amazing.

I only saw one section of them but you could pull over and climb up onto viewing areas to get a good look at them.

I wouldn't base my holiday around Carnac but it is worth half a day.

That's your opinion, and I gave mine.

I was interested in them, but as I said, I was disappointed.

Could be anywhere within a 50 mile radius of Buxton. Weather looks similar too :ROFLMAO:

Went there 20 years ago in a caravan and spent 2 weeks at Trinite sur mer, pissed down every day until the day before we were due to go home, then that made us more angry when we saw what could have been:Doh:

Been there and done that::bigsmile:

We have been to Trinite twice now in the May/ June half term.

In 2011 it was roasting hot, in 2012 we had 4 days rain, 3 days sun.

Not going this year but might try it again next year.

If you are looking for a campsite 5 minutes walk away try La Grande Metairie. Excellent site great amenities, gets very busy high season.
