Hi Bruce - loveley to meet you last weekend.,

DON'T BUY MESH in my opinion. poor quality, cheap and unreliable in my experience. Have you got a spec sheet of what you're looking for? - Processor, RAM, graphics card, Disc size(s) etc?

Hi, great to meet you too. Spec was the best I could find at the price. I've only had a laptop for some years now and have decided we have room in the static for a desktop and that one looked to be top spec in the price range. Now wondering if the quality is that bad. ::bigsmile:

Would this be better? Link Removed

If you're fairly knowledgable about what you want, have a look at www.overclockers.co.uk (link) and look at what the bits might cost to build your own. It only takes 3 or 4 hours, including breaks for coffee! (Honest!).

You'll need:-
Case
Power supply
motherboard
CPU
Ram
Hard Disc (s)
Graphics Card
possibly Sound Card
Keyboard
Mouse
Monitor
Operating System
other software as appropriate
(this list may not be complete, so please seek other's advice)

HP are reliable, but usually a little overpriced for what they contain. I would certainly, however, have one in preference to a Mesh (my opinion before the lawyers start).

The only skills you need for building your own system is the ability not to throw coffee all over the motherboard...and yes.,, before you ask (actually I sneezed it...)

What I usually do these days when we want a new PC is to go over to Teesside Park and look at the current offers in Comet, Staples, Currys and PC World (last two are the same chain but sometimes different options).

Given the fact that just about any PC these days can cope with what most of us throw at it, at least one of the shops usually has something on offer to suit - some bargains to be had with end of line deals as well.

Our two current desktop machines are both Gateway - one was bought in January 2006 from Staples for £599 and the other (base unit/keyboard/mouse only, no monitor) in March 2006 from Comet for £320.

With a background in software development on IBM mainframes (not unlike Geo's picture) our first couple of desktop machines were from IBM. Since then we've also had PCs from HP and e-Machines which we have been happy with.

Of course, for anyone requiring a machine for high end gaming or other resource intensive processing then maybe something more specialised is called for.

Mesh always seem to come out very well in the magazine tests. No experience of them myself, but Mrs klaatu got her first pooter from them many years ago and was very pleased with it.

But I agree with the suggestion to build your own, that's what I've always done. It's not at all difficult and you can build it exactly to your spec and be sure of the components that have gone into it.

I always used to get my bits from CCL, but I did live just round the corner from them, so it was very convenient.

For that kind of money if you knew your way around the insides you could buy the components and build a monster PC!
Personally though!
That one does look tasty but i would never buy an Intel processor when i can have an AMD one!
With that much Ram you would need a safety harness using an AMD with a parachute for brakes!
