Hi

We live 2 hours north of Bordeaux and are planning to leave just after Christmas Day to spend a month or two at the Chickenrun campsite in the south of Portugal.

As we're still novice MHomers and we've never ventured as far south before, just wondering if anyone can give us advice on route and, especially, a few places for nightly stop overs on the way.

We want to take the most direct route we can but avoiding toll roads. Have a Sat Nav, which we've set to avoid toll roads.

Hope to drive over into Spain on our first day so somewhere fairly near the border on the Spanish side for our first night would be good.

Many thanks in advance.

Depending on which route you take Granada is worth a visit we stopped at a free aire when we went over to Portugal via Granada, and again on the way back.
Venta Del Peral about 2 hours north of Granada N37. 33.258" W002. 36.512" it's literally an overnighter but has free water and facilities to dump waste with a cafe restaurant on site there's free wifi as well which can be received in the MH

A great aire in Portugal is at Castro Marim just across the border about an hours drive from Seville. N37. 13.199" W007. 26.666 be careful as its closed the 2nd Saturday of every month (market day) I strongly recommend the restaurant which backs onto the aire great value & great food

Hi and Merry Christmas, The route we always used when around Bordeaux area, is Bordeaux to Bayonne N10 then to Irun Spanish border crossing , then to San Sebastian either short distance on motorway or if you have time coast road, then to Victoria gasteiz N1 to Burgos using N1,at Burgos take N620 Valladolid N620 Salamanca, then on to N630 from salamanca to caleres to merida still on N630 to Sevilla at Sevilla take N431 to Huelva then into portugal then you can take the coast road N125 or the ip1, for over night stops we use the resturants/truck stops, some great food and always was good prices, ask whilst there if it s ok to park there for the night,`` never was told No´´ plus we always used them for breakfast, can't route you to the chicken run, but have heard good reports about it, so you should enjoy your self's there, hope all helps, enjoy your traveling down and home again, Regards Alf & M:Smile::thumb:ps on your return try Pau into france But check weather may be Snow up there but a great route though,

You could check out my Google map of recommended and visited aires all the way from Calais to Lagos (Near Chicken Run).
Some have facilities and many have sat. nav. co-ords.
Don't know about water in N Portugal in winter but many fonts used by the locals will be available I'm sure.
