Lovely clear cold night up here on the Northern Frontier RollEyes Just in from looking at Jupiter with binoculars, at least 4 moons visible For anyone interested its the largest brightest star just North of East.

Well worth a look. :thumb:

Great looking at the sky with the Sky Map app. Been trying to see Uranus, difficult with binoculars, I spose that's cos it's too far away?

the wee man asked for a telescope for crambo so we have got him a small one from toys are us it's a 30x60 zoom telescope
we were using binoculars but tis should do the job and if he likes it we will get him a bigger on any advice

Lots of good scopes around, try www.firstlightoptics.co.uk I have used them a lot.
Small scopes are good if the optics are good, otherwise they will just frustrate the hell out of you if you can't get a good image. Of course, better scopes mean more money, but more satisfaction too.
Heres an image I made earlier of Jupiter using an old washing up bottle and some sticky back plastic, oh, and a Meade LX90 8"

You can see the Great red spot, two moons and the shadow of one of them on the surface.

i bought a cheap scope from Lidl a couple of years back. german made and excellent optics for the price with 3 year warranty. under £50 as i recall

You can use a digital camera attached to the telescope, but I used a modified webcam with a massive 0.3 megapixel sensor! ( that's 480x640 pixels. I took about 60 separate images and stacked them together using Registax.
You need a very calm night with excellent visibility and no moon with a bit of patience ( and a hip flask)
Glad you like it. I did loads of images of the moon and Saturn too but didn't have the right equipment to do deep sky imaging of galaxies and stuff.
