I have recently been diagnosed with PD.
DVLA happy for me to drive on a 3 year licence. SWMBO also drives but has never driven abroad. Any thoughts or advice from you Funsters would be welcome.

So sorry to here your news but it may not be as bad as you think.

I know there are differing versions of it but my brother in law was first diagnosed 25 years ago. They actually moved to France five years ago and he is still driving over there (legally)

His, or my sisters advice, would be to get as involved as soon as possible with Leeds University so you get the best drugs available at the time and more importantly take the prescribed drugs as prescribed.

Incidently they are now involved with the research centre at Tolouse which is apparently the leading authority on PD.

Chin up 25 years is a long time and they are working on it as we speak.

I cared a Lady affected by PD . Just you enjoy every minute of your capacities . Drive all you want and (I didn't know about what Alan said Toulouse being the center of researches) if you need to go to Toulouse and stay there , be sure you'll be most than welcome at my place the time you need completly free of course. If flying... then I have a caravan which can greets you .... not top of modernity I'm afraid but it'll be my pleasure to do my best for you to feel at home. These are not only words OK? I do mean it.... Feel free to contact me whenever!

Try and get over to France as soon as possible - relaxed driving, relaxed way of life

My dad was diagnosed with PD in his 50s and his specialist always told him his chair was his worst enemy. The nature and onset of the illness varies from person to person, but if I could offer any general advice it would be keep moving - I'm sure the touring lifestyle will encourage that.

Sorry to hear that, bit I'm afraid I'm not the one that can offer any advice with the PD. Not one of my own chronic conditions, one of which I've had 40 years - so you do certainly have my empathy.

But as to the driving - here's a thought.

We often overnight immediately after crossing to France late evening or v early morning, on the Auchan supermarket carpark at St Martin Boulogne. Fresh bread after we get up and voom we're away.

Now in biggish towns like Boulogne and many many other towns and cities in France, large retail stores are very often situated on Retail Parks. They are very large indeed some of em, after all, France has a lot more space than England. There are proper roads with proper road markings and speed limit signs, roundabouts, even speed humps in some of em linking you to the acres of carpark for other stores. Very spacious.

Someone has suggested that I learn to drive our M/H - which I have tried once in France, never driven on that side before, never driven the beastie - Bad Idea I protested but husband wasn't v sympathetic - terrified me frankly, was sort of OK-ish for a few minutes till the juggernaut came the other way and rocked everything so I just had to pull in and I cried - but it still worries me - in an emergency is NOT the time to have your first go. And as things stand at the moment it would have to be an emergency for me to try it - here or abroad. That's ridiculous.

So someone on here suggested he takes me on an industrial estate on eg a Sunday when the businesses are closed. Sounded like a Plan to me. We ain't going anywhere in it we don't have to (dunno what that might be) between now and next year. He currently works weekends and the dark and shitty weather ain't optimal, but March time, here I come.

So why could that not be a Plan for your wife, only just in France, if she already drives it in UK? Early evening well the hypermarche itself may be open but not all the shops will be. So traffic will either be light or non-existent.

In summer, it doesn't get dark till late, of course.

Sorry nothing to do with Parkinson, but I keep seeing mistakes on my post and as I can't edit , then here is the correct way to say it : either "you are most welcome" or "you are more than welcome" and there's no "S" at the end of "greet"...
