Thinking about this-Can someone answer this.
If I build a machine with no optical drive, how do I install the operating system ?
Surely I can't download it off Internet before I have an operating system on the machine ?
Or can I ?
Mike.

Lets assume I don't have another machine or hardrive to download operating system to.

Then you would need a bootable version on a usb devise
lets face the latest systems seem set up to put themselves right from inbuilt back ups so a fresh install may also become a specialist job:RollEyes:

No doubt when the time comes the only way to buy software will be on a drive stick:Sad: then after that they will do away with usb and it'll be blue tooth transfer only, quickly followed by the sealed for life lap top and PC that will only work from the internet, it wont have any operating system or software:Eeek:

many many years! since I was a kid
basic connectivity will be written into the BIOS of the future motherboard. You will assemble a system and connect it to the internet and it will automatically download and instal the OS. From then on, it will be kept maintained software wise automatically from the NET without any user involvement, much the same as antivirus software does it now

just look at phones and tablets. they work out of the box, and update automatically. Any further software such as applications will also be download only with subscriptions held on an online server

most users just want their computer/device to turn on, connect and work. therefore taking the user interaction out of installing software is a good idea for most
