Its long been rumored that light trailer and caravans are to be subjected to an annual MoT type test
To day for the first time I have seen that suggestion in a Vosa written document

Vosa and the Dept for transport are in the process of reading a new EU testing regulation Draft document to evaluate there impact on the UK, and the way we do things at present
These drafts are so new they don't have numbers yet, all this is an attempt to harmonize testing across the EU

All so you lot can have an MoT while you are away on holliday

It is important to remember these draft proposals are purely to be analysed and negotiated by each member state and are not yet set in stone

I hope they do bring trailer caravans into the MOT testing equation. so many problems though setting it all up and a testing network in place

at least it would mean that caravans are checked at least once a year for roadworthyness.

so every trailer in the land will need some form of registration then.

there has to be some form of identification when 'on the road' or will VOSA just stop at random ?

would have thought their workload was high enough as it is.

my 'box' trailer is over 30 years old and wouldnt pass wind, if it could, let alone an MOT

The proposals to require testing for all trailers including caravans etc. was published by VOSA in a discussion doument some time ago.
If the proposals are implemented, and it looks as if they will be, they will extend to all trailers of all kinds, small ones, caravans, living vans, the lot.
The info has been out there long enough for this to be a done job.
About time too.
Some of the caravans on the road get no maintence at all and some small trailers we see about are a joke (a dangerous one).

from that info I expect all of my home built trailers will bo longer be legal as they have no makers load plate etc. The cost alone of mot'ing six trailers would finish me let alone having the caravan done in case I actually decided to sell it. The government in their wisdom is forcing us all off the road through cost alone, seperate trailer insurance will be the next thing. Well I hope I never see it arrive.

there is already rules for home builds etc . on oct 2014 teardrop caravand come into type aproval .other trailers i believe is this month . all getting very complicated . best only build old trailers i think .ha ha . by the way whats an mot .

If - and I stress if - there is a safety justification then why should we not be expected to pay the necessary amount to safeguard others?

If I remember correctly, when I had a caravan in the forces based in Germany we had to have the caravan go through an annual test for tyres, brakes, lights, rust etc... And you were issued a certificate. I think it was linked into the TuV test but carried out by your local REME workshop. It gave me piece of mind knowing that at least on that day the van was serviceable. Don't know whether it is still a requirement in Germany or not.

As a long time caravanner and ex-HGV driver, Fitter and Transport Manager I think testing is long overdue. As has already been said many caravans do not see any maintenance year in year out. I also think they should enforce power weight ratio regulations on caravans, bloody great big caravan loaded to the windows and towed by a medium hatch full of family and dog, an accident waiting to happen.
To carry on my rant - I reckon push bikes should be random checked and should have a registration number.

Roger... my 2 ton trailer over here in France has its own number plate and its own insuranceoh:

And is that the way trailers and caravans will be over here - their own Number Plates like it is on the continent? Yes, I think there should be MOT's for caravan's because as you say there are some dangerous outfits out there.
There should also be a system of being able to up the MGW of a caravan as there is in Sweden because the margins are so narrow, especially if you add a motor mover, microwave, sloar panels, etc. You are in almost negative equity before you start.
In Sweden you can upgrade by another 110kg, or there about if you upgrade the brakes so we were told by a Swedish couple.
