Wondered what favourite foods MHF members bring home from their continental trips? I know we can now get most things in the UK but sometimes they just don't taste the same or can cost less in a country where it is a national favourite - an example of the latter is saffron from Spain.
Other products I've liked from Spain include chorizo, fabada beans (from the north west) and manchega cheese.
I always buy kilo bags of grey sea salt in France - v. cheap and great for cooking whole fish in a salt crust. Also from France roquefort cheese, jars of fish soup, Brittany butter, violet garlic, croutons, and small jars of Panzani pasta sauces. When I was eating more chocolate, it would be bars of whole nut (almonds or hazelnut) bought from Casino supermarkets.
From Germany I am going to bring Lidl jams and marmalade - cheap, v. good flavour and a higher percentage of fruit in the apricot and black cherry jam - and jars of gherkins (they seem nicer than at home). May also bring some sauerkraut as I've developed a liking for that and will be exploring the knodels (potato dumplings) Jane showed me when I find them!
So, what do you like to bring home with you (apart from alcohol!)
