My Hymer B694 (1993) has 3 seat belts, front seats and a lap belt on the 3rd swivel seat.

I have looked at having 2 x 3 point harness belts fitted at the back seat, forward facing, in the u shaped lounge, this would consist of a bracket coming up from the boot to the middle at the back of the rear seat so 2 belts can be fitted 1 to fasten to the right and 1 to fasten 2 the left.
Also having the 3rd swivel seat lap belt changed for a 3 point harness, seat has to be unstitched and the bracket fitted in the back coming up over the right shoulder.

Found a company in Stockport, Manchester which have quoted £750, does this sound a reasonable price. Does anyone know of another company in the north west that can do a similar job.:thumb::thumb:

I know that legally i dont need to do it but if we are going to take the grandkids out they are not travelling without belts.

Interestingly, I can think of a couple of firm near Stockport who might do this but not one in Stockport. My concern is the strength of the upper mounts for the three point harnesses and how this is being achieved because I think once fitted they will be subject to MOT testing. i.e. the MOT will check all belts fitted even if they are aftermarket ones.

The company is Elite seatbelt fitters in Adswood industrial estate, they are specialist so i dont think there will be a problem with mot tests.

You actually found someone prepared to fabricate and fit seatbelt mounts :Eeek:

do they realise the implications if there is an accident and the belts fail ?

they obviously dont value their company very highly.

Elite are able to offer a complete and comprehensive range of equipment from world leading manufacturers.
  • The first independent seatbelt fitting company to take their responsibility seriously enough to have the seats and fitting configuration tested by MIRA to M3 standard
  • All work comes with certification that ALL SEATBELTS comply to ECE 16 EEC 77/541 and Construction and Regulation use 46/47/47A
  • Product Liability insured. Fully covered to £10 million.
  • Approved and recommended by major names in the coach and bus industry
  • Hundreds of satisfied customers, probably some in your area.
  • LOCAL AUTHORITY
  • MANUFACTURERS
[/HI]

The above statement is taken from their website, I dont have a problem with believing that they will do a good job, just want to check if the price seems ok or are there any other firms which would give a quote.

Fair enough.....they appear to be a responsible company who know what they are doing..

I assumed, wrongly, it was some backstreet garage making a few quid

My only concern would be,

that if the belts are fitted in the u shape lounge at the rear, if someone, particularly an HGV perhaps, was to rear end you, whoever was strapped in at the back of the van would not have a lot of protection....

Take your point Callumwa, however there are no other forward facing seats. If an HGV rear ends you it may not matter where you are sat.

Point taken, but I would rather be in the front or just behind the cab rather than sat at the rear of the van at the point of impact.

I can't recall seeing many rear lounge seats fitted with belts...

Why did my MOT tester check the belts in the back of my van then when I had aftermarket seats in there? It might have been to do with the age of the van but that's a sweeping statement above which I have my doubts over.

Yes , something to do with the crumple zone , we were told. Back when we were looking to buy a van suitable for all of us. Anything rear to the back wheels.

Cant remember what vans it was but a few new ones at the last show we went to had seat belts on the rear wall. I suppose its like using seats in a 7 seat car when there in the boot.

On a modern or new van, I imagine the van would have to have additional protection, such as a reinforced chassis/frame to pass the safety tests to protect the passengers if they were constructed with belted seats at the very rear.

On older vans I doubt the rear would have been constructed in such a way and adding belts to an area which was not constructed with belted seats would certainly worry me.

I'm sure belts could be added but I would not like young children on their own at the back of the van whilst driving. It would be difficult to chat with them never mind keeping an eye on them.

I like to keep an eye on our boys, and they are sat directly behind us.

Totally agree with you was just pointing out that some vans have them now which i still dont think i'd use as no matter what strength has been added i dont think it would do much good if rear ended

Hi PaulyP,

When I enquired about having extra seat belts fitted to our 99 Hymer, I was told that it was not possible, as the strengthened anchorage points required, would not have been built in at the time of construction.

I have driven many passenger coaches retrofitted with seat belts, but not seen a bit of timber, plywood, or polyurethane foam, in any of them, ie, all metal construction. Their retro belts are either anchored to the metal seat frames, or anchored to the existing seat rails, built into the floor space.

Can the firm possibly provide you with photographic evidence of their installation on a MH, or put you in touch with other customers, happy with an installation on their MH ?

Good luck with it. You seem to know what you want. I genuinely hope that's what you get.

Best regards,

Jock.

Hi Jock
It was explained that the metal framework would be fixed in the boot, fastened through the floor then come up behind the seat.
It would of course mean that when you open the rear door there would be a dividing bar in the middle, but as it's quite wide and there is a side door i should still have good access.
I was assured it would be well anchored in.::bigsmile:

Hi Paulyp

You need to check with your local VOSA testing centre yours will be Bredbury or Chadderton.
When you present your vehicle for mot test the tester will have a computer print out giving all your vehicle details including the number of seat belts fitted.
If you have extra belts you will have to take the vehicle to a VOSA test centre to have the installation type approved not a problem if they are fitted correctly they can also carry out your mot test for you if you wish.
No idea of the cost involved its eight years since i retired after 25yrs mot testing.

Won't the people who install these belts provide a certificate of conformity or whatever the EU rules require? I'm sure that's what mine did.

I understand a bit more what is being proposed here but I'm still not sure how (or maybe how far) a framework will need to run forward and attach to the existing chassis. I'd have thought there's not much strength beyond the rear spring hangers or suspension mounting points on many motorhomes.

Page 1 of the thread quotes from their website about the certificate of conformity. And the fact that it conforms to the correct standards. As for the fitting I dont have a problem with how it will be done, as it has to conform to the standards.
