Moroccan Tour/Meet. (1 Viewer)

Since the purchase of our new to use Eurocamper we have decided to cancel our planned tour of the States and return to Morocco this winter. If anyone is interested in meeting up or tagging along for a while we would be more than happy for you to do so. Normally we don't have any set plans and just go with the flow. We plan on leaving around the first week of January and spending a month or so slowly travelling through France and Spain, arriving in Morocco end January. We will then travel down the west coast and then inland from South of Agadir. We thought of staying around one month in perhaps Zagora on a campsite before touring back up around April. If anyone is interested in joining us for any part of this trip please feel free to add any comments or suggestions. I must stress that this is not a guided tour as such but more of a trundle round with like minded people, but will give the added security for those that have never done Morocco to travel with those that have. We will be using a mixture of wild camps, beach camps and occasionally campsites for this trip, so if anyone is not happy with wild camping but still wants to join us they can use campsites and meet up later on the trip.
For those that have not read last years thread, look up "Overwintering in Morocco" on here. This will give you some idea of what its all about.

We visited Morocco last year during late January February had fantastic time. We are going again but probably not until middle of February as we spend a couple of months at Zahora but if our paths and times cross we would love to travel some of the way with you

Could well be interested in joining the "caravan" when it arrives in Costa del Sol. Planning to over winter in Algarve but have been tempted for some time by the idea of an extended visit to Morocco in the New Year...... no reason why we should not do BOTH !! Will keep my eye on this thread to see if it develops into a full blown "plan"

Hi, Thanks for the interest. I will update this thread as and when plans are made. Would also be interested in hearing from others regarding places they would like to see and in what area they would like to hold an impromptu meet. We like the coast south of Agadir as its not so commercialised and we also like Tafrout and Zagora which are in the interior. There is also a very nice French owned site in Marrakesh with pool and good restaurant although it is somewhat expensive by Moroccan standards.

One place I'd love to visit again is Essouria. It's cute and manageable in size. Ray's campsite wasn't anything to shout about but it was a nice bike ride into town.

It could be that it was close to a European seaside town that appeals, boriiiiiing, I know.

However, 'er indoors does not want to return, no idea why.

We'd be interested.
Been thinking about Morocco for the last year and it's only the fear of the unknown that puts us off (that and the comfort of the familiar ie Portugal/Spain).
This informal type of arrangement would suit us well as we are not ones for being over-organised and regimented. So a few days/couple of weeks with an old hand to get us started would be perfect. (sorry, didn't mean you were old)

Hi Makems, Thats exactly what we were thinking. Its much easier if you know there are others pottering around in the same country. Arriving in Tagier can be a little daunting the first time as you have to get paperwork stamped etc, so its always easier if someone knows the ropes. The last thing in the world I want is to be a tour guide or to be regimented but am more than happy to help others enjoy Morocco who have not been before. What I would like is that anyone thinking of coming along to do some homework first re, places to visit and things to do. Though I have visited several times there is always something new so come on lets have some ideas.

Would love to include - Fes & Essouria, don't know why except on a driving (non MH) visit 2 years ago most of the locals we spoke to said that Fes was a must see and Essouria comes highly rated on this forum. Marrakesh was the furthest we travelled at that time so have no experience further south. SWMBO has just suggested....... where the Argan nuts are grown, wherever that might be.

hi, i,m sure snowy will possibly take you down the coast visiting rabat .casablanca ,el jadida oulidia ,safi.,essouria, sidi kouki .some you may have to come back to .as there are so many nice places . to stay or visit .
take another tour of taffroute to tiznit back to agadir . or bit further south .
then taroudant and tizi n test to marrakech.then tizi n tichka to quarzazate and on to zaggora .
yet even then you miss the taradant to tata desert run to foum zguid .
back to quarzazate to visit the gorges dades and todra .then on to tafilalt to erfoud the fossil center also to erg chebbi, then i suggest azrou, to fez. then meknes and on to volubilis a must . upto chefchaouen and out .
there are loads more routes to go. takes more than one trip. you will be back . you have to go right south to dakla at least once . out to fort bou.jerif once.
still havent done any cascades . but from agadir paradise valley and immouzzer is a 2 day trip .or longer maybe.
also the lakes on the marrakech road another outing .
unfortunately i,m not going this year .but hope it inspires the many that are thinking about it . i very often travel with a dutch man he as maps used by planes that show all the little roads and passable tracks . many now tarmaced .
but dave as been enough to show the way .
it really is a mind blowing experiance .i first went in 1976 never been bored with it . it does and has changed . when you get back here it does make you look at life different believe me . have fun . shame i,m not going .
as it is i prefer to be there in dec jan ,feb march . i find april can get a bit windy in the desert .but you will have fun i,m sure.

GPS for Morocco ?

In the event that this trip comes to fruition..... is a GPS download from (in my case) Garmin really practical, just checked and they want €99.99 for Morocco only. Are there that many roads which have been mapped, or would a good quality map suffice ?

A good map such as Michelin is good enough for where we will be going. We dont do much if any off tarmac, having spent many years wandering around in the deserts of the world.
I do have Morocco on my tomtom and most if not all roads are on it, surfaced and unsurfaced.

hi yes the michelin 742 is adequate even for jaunts on tracks . more and more roads are being tarmaced every year . not always full size but you just slow down and put one wheel in the gravel . always slightly press on the windscreen when cars are over taking or coming your way .it takes the shock out if a stone flies up. you will see moroccans doing it they arent waving at you all the time .
go on dave do abit of shaky driving . all good fun.

Having dragged 40 ton plus loads halfway round the world for most of my life on non existent roads with only oil drums for markers I think have done enough shaky driving now Al. Besides the body wont stand any more of that punishment .

Have started the preparations already. Have fitted the second fuel tank today, so with the 125 litre standard tank and the 110 litre tank I have fitted in the garage I now have over 1000 mile range which I always try to strive for. Running out on bio and filling up in Tangier on the return trip certainly has its benefits. There is only two slight problems to sort now and they are only minor hiccups. One is the Truma gas heater will only work on the low setting and the other is the Cramer ceramic hob has an intermittent fault that sometimes it wont light. As there is no gas rings as such, only a glass top I cant light it manually. Once these problems are sorted I can start to make some plans for the trip. Anyone thats interested please feel free to say where would be a good place to hold a meet for perhaps four or five weeks. The plan is to tour for a couple of months and sit for maybe one month. Or tour for six weeks and sit for three weeks in one place and three weeks in another.

The walkie talkies are a good idea Al. I used to have a pair but now only one as someone borrowed the other and forgot to give it back :Angry:.

we get then from aldi or lidl . i like the ones that you charge up . if you get the battery ones they eat batteries . i fitted an inverter in the cab so i can charge on the move . truck is 24v . used to have some that you could leave the charge wire connected mynew ones only charge when on their stand but work ok. god range and ideal if stopped at hyper markets . keep in touch even in the store .they all seem to use the same channels .

Now we are back from our tour of Brittany which turned into a tour of Brittany and the Dordoigne oh:. I will be putting some ideas into action for those that may be contemplating joining us on any part of the Moroccan trip. As I have already said, please don't think of it as a guided tour with paid local guides as its nothing like that. It will just be a friendly get together of like minded people who enjoy travel with a little adventure thrown in for good measure. We would encourage you to do your own thing and hop on and off as it suits. Am sure that any of you that are considering a trip to Morocco for the first time will be a little apprehensive and I along with any other seasoned Moroccan travellers will be more than happy to advise and help as much as possible. I guarantee that once you have found your legs you will be off exploring on your own.

Such a shame , this is one year too early for us!! No motorhome for us this winter. Australia to spend Xmas with our daughter and husband then a trip to New Zealand touring by motorbike . Did it 4 years ago and loved it.

Morocco next winter have flown to Marrakech for a holiday and loved it . Stayed in a Riad in the Medina. Can't wait to take the van. Have fun all you lucky folks :thumb:

It was great meeting you at Long Marston, and thanks for the advice and the chat.
We will keep an eye on this thread to see if we can meet up somewhere.

We are setting off on the 17th November, Dover-Calais, through Tours over into Spain round Madrid down to Algecaras, no rush, then over to Morocco for 2-3 months. We are following your route from last year, and driving down the west coast to Agidiir, then who knows. CAN'T WAIT.:thumb:
