Yesterday should have been a good day. We were picking up our new motorhome. A brand new autotrail Comanche with top spec. Anyway we arrived at dealer everything was perfect the van was gleaming. And I must say I was happy. So we leave the dealer and head for home. Everything was fine new auto box was smooth, the smell of new leather in the air, the m40 was clear, then some thing gave way in the engine. It sounded as if you had a pebble in the tumble drier. Instrument panel saying oil pressure!!! So limped into Warwick services I did. So underneath i go, no loss of fluid, no obvious fault, so call rac camper assistance, explain I'm ex rac patrol and need a low loader ect ect. 2.5hrs later rac arrive in a van.. To my amazement he said the same as me " you need a low loader, engine u/s" seven hrs later we get recovered to Coventry and find our own way home. Needless to say I'm still in bed and don't wana get out of it. We should have been on the south coast today but hey that's fiat for ya..

I normaly get the motor bike, followed by the escort van ,then the transit and then the 7.5 tonner,its not till all 4 have agreed i needed a low loader do i get one

are you able to get a new replacement van from the dealer as you only had it 7 hours?
i would have insisted and gone on my planned trip

crazy if they only offer to repair it i would loose any confidence in going any where in it after that happened
who was the dealer? what have they offered to you ?
keep us all updated with what happens

my 14years old truck keeps on going not sure i want to risk a change as the devil you know and all that

I must say the dealers have been excellent they arranged for garages ect ect.
Offered me a replacement motorhome until mine is repaired ect ect. The problem is that it's too much hastle in loading unloading motorhomes as I like my comforts !!! But I will keep you informed.

Earlier this month I had a fen belt problem. I know that it cannot be fixed at the roadside. I rang RAC commercial and told them it needed a large recovery flat bed due to the rear overhang and it was a garage job to fix the belt.

They sent out their 44 ton recovery truck that is used to recover coaches and loaded wagons. There was no question of a van coming the truck just arrived.

Oh Alan - what an utterly ridiculous thing to happen to you, of all people!

That's the equivalent of JAWS buying a new motorbike and it failing on the way home.

What an absolutely dreadful thing to happen. Commisserations. It could have been worse you could have beenaway on a trip in europe or further afar. Hope it all works out ok. Keep us updated

sorry to hear of your problem, no the best of starts. I would insist on a replacement and not a repair who knows what else is ready to fail.

Just an update..

seems as though when the engine was built they never tightened the big end bolts up properley, as they were all finger loose and no 4 cylinder had come apart completely. oh:
thus causing major engine damage.
Fiat have now arranged for a new engine to be shipped from milan and we should have it back early part of next week.
but i aint holding my breath......

Absolutely unbelieveable. Hope fiat are sending you some freebies. You seem to have been very laid back over it all I would have gone bananas! Good luck with the new engine. What are yourplans this time?

Just think... you might have been in Italy and had to take it to the main Fiat Dealer in somewhere like... Milan.

Really sorry to hear about your problems, I am also of the opinion I would want a new mh, not just a replacement engine..........who knows what else might have been missed.
You don't expect things like this to happen with a new van.

Wouldn't the motorhome part of the motorhome be built by completely different people?

I always thought that companies like Fiat etc supply the cab/chassis for the conversion.

Surely the fact that the engine was put together wrong does not have any bearing at all on how, for example, the cupboards or cooker etc? are built and/or fitted?

We are really sorry to hear about your "Fiat" problems and hope that everything ends up well.

Very sorry to hear about your Fiat problem. Hope you are back on the road soon.
We just picked up our new Autotrail Comanche a couple of weeks ago and have a few snagging problems in the habitation department which should be sorted by the dealer on Thursday. Went to a steam rally last Tuesday ( helping with the engines) and as I reversed into our slot it started to judder like mad. I thought Fiat had cured this but it will now have to be a trip to the local Iveco dealer.

The big end bolts are, as you know, inside the engine which was no doubt built in a huge engine plant and then fitted to the chassis but the chassis people an then suppled to the converters.

There would have been no way for either the chassis builders or the converters to be able to check those nuts.

Therefore the fact that the big end dropped off in the engine is no indication that there was anything wrong with the brakes or gearbox OR cupboards or cookers.

A new engine and the van will back to new condition.

Sorry about the van, the post does pose some serious questions,

A) Where is the quality control at Fiat? I know with my van they charge an arm and a leg for spares.
B) Not your van, but I have heard some horrendous stories about motorhomes with withe oarts missing, badly put together and covered up.

A motorhome, is not a £400 old banger, it can be into the £100,000's plus and there must be some quality control with either the van or the habitation bit, along with the dealers, they all must have some responsibilty and the must have some checks before they hand over a valuabel piece of kit...

Some are and some ain't IVECO uses Sofim engines also used in Renault masters-Fiat use them in some vans and there own fiat engines depending on engine size
