Can anyone answer this on gross vehicle weight please

We have a new Rapido with a Fiat engine and cab but with an Alko chassis the problem comes with the plates on the front of which there are three

The Rapido puts the gross weight at 3500Kg
The Fiat one puts the gross weight at 3650 Kg
and the Alko plate says 3700Kg

It is registered on the log book as 3500kg but this is too close for comfort, driving up to 7500Kg on my licence is not a problem.

What should it say on the log book?

Thanks Alan

the Alko plate takes priority and it should have been registered as 3700kg by the registering dealer....half of them dont have a clue what weight to register as so just say 3500kg.

a trip to your local DVLA office will sort it.

take your V5 and photo's of the van including the Alko plate and the number plate.

also take your insurance, MOT(if needed) and tax disc along with £165 for a years new road tax (or £90 odd for 6 months)....the old disc will be refunded for any full months remaining.

they will not change the revenue class without buying new road tax on the spot.

at the moment, as its registered as 3500kg, that is your gross weight limit...even though the plate states 3700kg.

i had the same problem on our Kontiki.....3850kg registered as 3500kg.
3 x plates....Fiat 3500kg, Swift 3850kg and Alko 3850kg.
took about 20 mins at the Beverley DVLA office, tax disc issued on the spot and a 5 week wait for the new updated V5 to arrive.

Hi Alan
I went from 3500 to 3700 via SV Tech, I took the paper work to DVLA in Preston (Fulwood) it was quite straight forword, they issued a new tax disc there and then with no payment from me, a refund for the difference in the now lower tax due it is now classed has PLG, came through the post also a new log book. Pete

Ps
I know this is a different situation from you but it can all be sorted.:thumb::thumb:

Just jumping on the bandwagon here, hope you don't mind.

The Explorer Group (Elddis) plate on our MH is :

MTPLM 3500
MIRO 2850
1 1850
2 2000

The Peugeot plate is :

3500
6000
1 1850
2 2000

As I understand it 1 and 2 refer to front and rear axle maximum weight and 3500 is the overall max weight. Both 1 and 2 added together make 3850 in both cases.
What does the 6000 and 2850 refer to and why isn't the gross 3850.

Sorry to be a numpty, but it is nagging me.

2850kg is the weight the van came out of the converters factory...the kerb weight.

6000kg is the train weight......van(3500kg) and trailer(2500kg) maximum combined weight

the 3850kg is the combined fully loaded axle weight...but you cant go over 3500kg.
it allows for uneven loading of the van...IE: if you have 2000kg on the rear axle you can only have 1500kg on the front axle...or...if you have 1850kg on the front, you can only have 1650kg on the rear......or any combination of the two added up to 3500kg.

MTPLM = maximum technically permitted laden mass.......or gross weight to you and me.

MIRO = mass in running order........unladen weight as it drove out the factory gates, no goods or shattles.

By the look of it I will have to put all of our bits in the trailer. Seems like the only way I will get all of "the bosses" stuff in.

better than many......you can drag 650kg of junk around before going overweight.

dont forget, anything you've added after leaving the factory, solar panels, tv (if it didn't come with one), extra battery etc all eats into your payload allowance....including water and your family...usually around 75kg is allowed in the kerb weight for the driver.

Thank you Pappajohn for some nice clear explanations.

Have you ever thought of changing jobs and becoming a motorhome salesman you should do so much better than many currently doing the job as they appear to know too little

Sometimes its not worth messing about with weights, although, if i remember correctly, my 3850 van was cheaper on tax (private hgv) than my current 3500, BUT,.....although another member on here had EXACTLY the same van, EXACTLY the same year,..because his was 3500 and mine was rated at 3850, HIS was LEZ compliant, and mine was not!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the link Jim.

never realised it had changed, but that must only apply to a van built after 2010...not retrospectively...as the dealer would have rated it under the old requirements.

Is that all ?

That's less than 11st isn't it?

That appeared to be the standard allowance whether for a van, car or truck.

as read in Scotjims link, under the new guide lines it appears the weight allowance for gas is a pair of 5kg BP light bottles, the equivalent of one steel 6kg propane bottle....so a pair of 13kg steel bottles will really eat into your payload.

as the link points to caravans, i cant find reference to a driver weight allowance though...maybe there isnt one :Eeek:

Alan it is as Geo has said, you have the choice....that is what you can have if YOU change it, when the motorhome leaves the factory it is rated at 3500kg (What is on your log book) it is the same over here in France for us to change....we did ours when we purchased the motorhome from the paris show.....All done through Rapido before it left the factory.... Rapido altered and plated the motorhome to 3700kg this is what your alko chassis is rated at....so if you want to uprate to 3700kg from 3500kg you have to contact DVLA or SV Tech as the other funster has said as it is only paper work that needs altering, nothing need's altering on the chassis....but untill you get altered... IT IS RATED At 3500kg what is on your log book:Doh:
