I've found that the free ones always have their problems and cant be fully relied on. My son swears by Commodo.

I'm running AVG fine on the old clunker, 95, but wondered if there was anything else for 7?

Yeah, we had some problems with AVG on our new laptop, so installed avast! and all runs fine.

Also use Open Office instead of MS Word, etc. and that's great too.

I've switched from AVG, which has been great on my last 3 pc's.

Gone for Microsoft Security Essentials because it scored top marks in one of the ANORAK magazines, plus my IT guru swears [STRIKE]at[/STRIKE] by it. :thumb:

AVG and Microsoft Essentials can be relied upon because they are an integral part of the OS design. You pay for them when you pay for your OS. They aint free.

I've used all at one time or another, and until my Bank offered me a one years free license for Kaspersky was using MS Security Essentials.. and still do on my other lappy as does Jan and Chaz.. no issues... but I guess you only know how 'good' it is when or if it stops an attack .. much like MH insurance ..

For some independent reviews on anti virus and other free stuff I find this site very helpful..

Thanks all:thumb: Did a bit of googling to and I've gone with the MSE but, now trying to understand the scan as it appears if the machine is off obviously the scan wont run but it wont run on next boot up, ie it needs to be on at the set time, very odd.......

Microsoft Security Essentials for me.

Would agree with that - there are no compatability issues - had less problems since we started with that one than with any previous ones

could this be the issue ?

Microsoft Security Essentials requires a genuine copy of Windows to install.

Think I figured out the scan now so all good.

The thing I like about the sound of it is the consistent reviews about the lack if impact in the machines operation, Norton used to stop the old machine dead in it tracks for 10-20 minutes regularly:Angry: hence changing it to AVG, not changing it again as it's time is short::bigsmile:

My bad, the scheduling bit, it's wasn't clear if it would run the scan on next fire up or whether it had to be on at the alloted time.

Seems it does, just isn't clear, and yes geniune copy came with the Acer netbook::bigsmile:

It came with trial Macafee, or whatever and no way I was continuing that.

I own a hosting company and security is one of my main concerns.
I regularly test both server and client based AV packages.

I rate MS Essentials the highest. It puts the least load on the machine. You can carry on working while it gets on with the scan. It doesn't clutter your computer up with other crap. It is free and regularly updated.

It is getting to the point now where I won't be bothering testing anymore and just recommend Essentials...

Microsoft Security Essentials for me.

This is what I am using, Microsoft Security Essentials on our netbook............. After re-newing Norton for the second year then netbook crashed after installing the new Norton!!! . So I had revert back to factory settings...... that was a waste time and money:Doh::cry:....
that is the last time I use Norton.

So this week I have now just installed Microsoft Security Essentials on the main desktop computer:thumb:
