which engine for hymer (1 Viewer)

can anyone tell me if the fiat 2.8 engine is a significant improvement over the earlier 2.5 version when fitted in the hymers ? it seems to give out an extra 10 bhp [i think] or does the more complex nature of [what i presume will be a common rail electronically fuelled engine] bring more negatives than positives ?

I have not driven a 2.5 engine but my Iveco, with its 2.8 turbo is a joy to drive and pretty quick should you choose to be in a hurry...

I feel that engine cc is like computer RAM or beers in the fridge... the more you can have the better it is...

errr question for you do both engines use the same gearbox and change ratios or would you also have to change the gearbox and not knowing much about engines would the diff also be compatible

Either the iveco or merc engine are he ones to go for, avoid fiat!
This is what all those in the know advised us when looking at hymers and laikas

lol! Fiat have their paws in everything these days

new one is, old one was a ford....which explains why the newer ivecos are troublesome. Very unrefined engine though, the ford one, but is reliable if leaky and stinky as they are.I would stick to a merc over iveco, but that was what we were advised.

My Iveco is 1996... no common rail... no ECU... no nonsense... runs as smoothly as Sun Pat Smooth peanut butter... :thumb:

the earlier iveco daily vans had fiat engines then went to ford engines but now the fiats are on iveco engines but seeing as fiat own iveco vans and ford own iveco trucks.

i even believe that some of the small ford duratorq engines are a fiat one.

as for the mercedes engines they were great up until the advent of the CDi since then they have lost their reliability

My sis had a 1995 Hymer fiat 2.5td, then drove my 2000 hymer 2.8 fiat....she said the 2.8 had a lot more 'poke', so much so she changed hers for a 2002 hymer 2002.

2.8 better engine and the gearbox was designed for 5 speed, the older 2.5 gearbox can have problems with 5th gear as it was an addition to a four speed box but its not difficult to repair 5th gear

Fiat 2.5 & 2.8

I started with a 1997 hymer 564 which I thought was fine for the size of the vehicle, my next van was a 584 with the non common rail 2.8 and went really well, a marked improvement on the 2.5.
I then bought a 624 with the common rail 2.8 and it was a bit of a slug compared to the 584.
The base vehicle was a bit heavier, but it wasn't as nice to drive!:Sad:
I fitted a tuning kit box on to it and it is back to the same standard as the 584 now.:thumb::thumb:
As mentioned before you don't expect racing car performance but it is nice to have a bit of go under the pedal!

Only down side is, it's a bit harder on the clutch, so go steady with the left foot if you do go down that route

it doesn't matter what its fitted in, the 2.8 is superior to the 2.5.

I've had both, in Kontiki's, and the difference is very noticeable.

the 2.5 was in a 3500kg van and the 2.8 was in a 3850kg.
even though the 2.8 was 350kg heavier it was far better to drive, having the extra 'umph' when needed.
