LibreOffice has finally released version 3.5.0.
This is the bug fix after they removed 15 years worth of bloat....

I have just downloaded it and it is looking much better.

Is it a tidying up job Gromett or can you put your finger on any changes ?

There are a couple of pc's I will update if there is an improvement but sometimes there has been an update in LO or OO which has just bloated.

And for anyone wondering what this is, it's a version of OpenOffice, a free word processor/spreadsheet/drawing/database package for those of us who would rather not buy Microsoft Office...

...and, as in my case, for those of us who when we ask someone for a screen capture to help fix a problem, still get them embedded in .doc and .xls files

or, get .doc files when a simple, read-only PDF would do the trick (Chester Camperfest/food festival....I'm talking about you)

...aaaaaand...relax

LibreOffice has finally released version 3.5.0.

Thanks, it's downloading now.

Has no-one done an open source Windows ? Or has Linux made that unviable ?

Stage 1 complete - Office 2000 and other bits zapped. Registry cleaned. It doesn't half boot quickly now.

So, going in chaps, if you don't hear from me you WILL hear of a large explosion under a motorhome.

Although why anyone would want it is still a mystery to me :whatthe:

If you want an alternative to windows there is;
Linux (Loads and Loads of different Distro's)
BSD (More Unix like)
Apple OS/X
Minix (Education Microkernel)
Haiku (Open Source version of Beos)
Plan 9 (Another Unix like)
AmigaOS (First pre-emptive multitasking OS for the home computer)

Lots more though.

LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice resulting from Oracle taking over Sun. Sun were fairly opensource friendly but Oracle isn't so it was forked. The entire codebase was taken and most of the developers moved across.

They then looked at the codebase and found a mass of duplicate/redundant code. They removed this in the last alpha release and have been cleaning up the bugs caused by this mass pruning. The 3.5.0 release is the first release since this clean up.

They have also added loads of features and the software is actually moving forward at a fair clip for the first time in years.

Quick coverage of the story so far can be read here.

Forking is one of the big advantages of OpenSource and GPL'd software. No one owns the codebase outright...:thumb::thumb::thumb:

I am running open office 3.3 currently. Do i understand from this that it is a good idea to uninstall and install the new version of libre office instead?

I would stick with oo 3.3 for the moment or LibreOffice 3.4 unless you are sure it's what you want. I can confirm the new libreoffice 3.5 is smaller and loads quicker. I have not found any bugs yet so I am happy with it. Although I only use the Spreadsheet at the moment.

It has some new features that are welcome as well:thumb:

Semiconductor manufacturers tools. Compilers. Programmers. All come out on Windows.

I'm not a big enough masochist to go hunting "free" versions just for the pain of it when a lot is free under windows anyway.

OK the bomb is defused. 3.5 is working.

Word doc edited and printed. Only thing is choosing format to save in, I've used word for now.

I can tell it's not Word on the printed page, very slight but insignificant difference.

Excel sheet opened and worked.

So far so good, thanks again.
