Looking at Silver Screen and Taylor Made screen covers. Is there much reason to choose one over the other?
Also i see Taylor Made offer a longer version that covers the grills for an extra £25, is that worth spending?

Been told that the reason for spending £350 on something like a Avtex TV over a £100 Bush 12v is the ease of tuning. Is it really susch a major pain to have to re-tune a normal TV than one of the specialist ones, or are there other reasons as well.

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,I have had both SS and TM nothing to choose in them :thumb:Never had the longer version of TM but I presently have the nosy net version of TM and I use the wipers to stop the cover blowing up thus blocking the nosy net :winky: Not sure if they Velcro the longer version to stop this happening ?
Tuning the Bush tv is same as others simply choose first time installation-takes a couple of mins to find all channels :thumb:You will get lots on here on about viewing angles etc but that all depends on where the tv is

We bought Taylor Made covers because they were at a particular show when we wanted some. From what I've heard there isn't a lot to choose between the brands.

As regards TVs a major factor is using them on 12v rather than mains. Some "ordinary" models are hard wired mains only. Many of the ones which use a transformer brick (when on mains power) require a steadier 12v supply than is provided from a battery and/or will use more power than those designed for battery power.

Thanks for the replies. Not see the `nosy nets` version on their website, what is it?

Just found on SS awful website that they also do a extender that means opening the bonnet to attach. Anyone know whether that serves a useful purpose or is that more trouble than it`s worth?

I have been using a LCD TV which was less than £100 for 8 years on 12v with no problems. Because digital was not invented when I bought it I have a tiny digibox (Bush) which is just like a large SCART plug. TV was from Comet and is branded Kenmark.

I suppose because of it's age it will give up eventually but if so it would be replaced with another cheapy.

Finally got through to SS and there is quite a difference in price, £149 for Ss as opposed to £96 for TM.

SS say there extra extension bit is really only for severe winter use, so if there is not much difference in quality seems TM is the best buy as you could safe £50 or buy the longer version if covering the vents is useful and still save £20.

Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
We've got the proper silver screen with the drop down at the front. It has a mesh inner , is that the nosey net bit ? We've also got the bib which covers the vents , for when its really cold and windy , but that came with ours. It gets plenty of use as we use our MH all year round. The screen really keeps the heat in and cold out. It also stops condensation. With 5 of us and 2 dogs we wouldnt be without it.

As for the flat screen tv , i dont know what make it is  Ralph bought it.
But we didnt fix it to the clamp in the cupboard provided. Cant understand why anyone would think that an ideal possition to veiw. Raph took the bracket out. fixed it under the luton . Between the driver and passenger seats. It swivells round and flips up flat against the underneath of the over head cab bed , with an attached clip , when not in use.
Once dropped down everyone can see the TV , from where ever they sit.

This is the Motorhome with the silver screen on. Showing the drop down "nosey net" bit. The extra bit , bib , that covers the vents is not on. It got to -12 through the night. We stayed at 22 deg plus inside. With no condensation streaming down the glass.

Silver screens for me, just popped them back on before dusk, depending on view we sometimes leave them in place and fold down the privacy panel, but its been such a sunny afternoon and we've views to die for, they only take a minute to remove or fit.

TV's its a case of "you get what you pay for" cheaper models can have abysmal viewing angles and sound quality. If looking at budget models check not only sound quality but where the speakers are mounted. Many are underneath or on the rear of the casing, no big deal but it can mean you need to turn sound up to hear it clearly, this can annoy neighbours on a site. Avtex have theirs mounted on the front, viewing angles are superb and just one button to press for a complete retune, we went for the latter expensive but no regrets.:thumb::thumb::thumb:

Hi we have silver screen and they are great. No long bit for over the engine vent but are shortly off to Germany so may take something to do this (like a black plastic bag and some gaffer tape)

I am surprised at the price. We paid around £120 for ours but it was a couple of years back. The website is a bit cr*p but the service is good.

As to tvs we have one we bought for about £120 from Comet I think. It is a 12v one. Easy peasy to set channels up providing the aerial is pointing in the right direction you just do run the installation to find available channels.

Picture can be a bit iffy if tv is at the wrong angle but we can sort ours so that it is no problem for the two of us to watch.

Hi Steve

I looked at both screen covers and found them very similar. Got the Taylor Made as they would have them delivered abroad. I was speaking to someone today who had the longer version fitted and he said it made a lot of difference especially on windy nights.

Beauty of the longer Taylor Made is that by covering the bonnet grilles it prevents water ingress to the top of the engine that was causing rust on the injectors, Peuguot has now modified the underbonnet to prevent this happening but if you can stop the rain entering in the first place.............. :thumb:

Silver screen will let you trade in your covers if you change your van, so they may often have second hand ones for sale. I queried the price on my covers and they did them cheaper by using the end of the roll (i.e. the bit around the tube). Apparently the covers can be slightly more creased using this, hence the lower price, but I've not noticed a difference.

As far as TVs are concerned, my cheapo supermarket TV had an appalling viewing angle so have just upgraded to Avtex. The Avtex does have the capability of recording to a memory stick so that you can pause live tv. Unfortunately, I haven't managed to get away since I bought the TV so haven't given it a good work out yet!

We have the longer Taylor Made covers and they cover the grilles on the front to stop any snow or water getting in and we have the nosy net,(privacy screen) there is velcro to keep it attached and goes on like a sandwich, the net costs £20 extra , we found a massive difference when putting the screens on, it is a lot warmer and no condensation.
PS
I have noticed the silver screens fold up smaller so takes up less room I guess when not in use, I was a nosy neighbour watching someone with Silver screens putting them away!!!

viewing angles shouldnt be a problem with a 10" tv.......you need to sit so close to it anyway just to see the picture. :roflmto:

i have a 22" lcd tv mounted above the windscreen and can view it from any angle.....even from the bed at the back (just) and thats 9mtrs away.

Must admit I bought a cheaper screen off the web. It's now in the loft and I will offer it to people over the years. Wasn't too bad but very diddly to get it to fit correctly. Went and got one from ss. Easy and quick to fit.

TVs . You get what you pay for, but remember if there are only two of you , you could cuddle up and share the best viewing angle. Obviously that's for valentines day , as I write this with my good lady at the opposite end of the room.

Thing is, if you get a nice location, and the weather to go with it, the telly isn't that important......
