Hi and welcome to the forum. I hope you get to enjoy your van, from the quote sounds like you are a young driver, if not then it is way over the top.
again recommend Frank Pickles.

Jesus. Do you have "Rich Mug" tattooed on your head ?

Safeguard charge us £350 for a similar risk. With European breakdown cover.

Firstly welcome to Motorhome Fun, it does seem excessive we pay £280 with Comfort Insurance, (specialist motorhome insurers) for full European cover. I would try ringing around a few insurers, good luck do let us know how you get on.:welcomefunster:

We were with Safeguard at about £240. This year switched to insurance through Caravan Club. Annual premium now circa £200.

Since 2011 therefore I'm not a newbie anymore
Cost of Insurance is based on the replacement value of the motorhome.

If it is new then the cost will be high as most insurers will give you new for old for the first one or two years if the van is new.

Cost goes down over years as value of motorhome decreases.

Be aware some insurers require either an imobiliser - usually fitted on Fiat Ducato (Thatcham 2) - and a van alarm which then makes it a Thatcham 1 standard alarm system.

I am currently with the Caravan Club, they only wanted an imobiliser and not an alarm
(though will be getting one fitted).

Get at least three quotes and in my experience go for items covered and standard of service - not cheapness.

Hope this helps :thumb:

Hi and welcome!

We're with Safeguard and are paying £340 for full comp., full UK/European breakdown recovery. This may be higher than some quotes, but the van is new. This is with two named drivers, as with previous comments posted we would recommend phoning around or get on t'internet:roflmto:

Good luck with it:thumb:

We're with Safeguard. £350 fully comp incl European breakdown.
Went with them for the European breakdown cover. They give unlimited time abroad (we go away for 3-4 months sometimes) and covered our 19 year old van - some only cover vans up to 10 years old and put a max of 90 days in any one year.
Make sure you get breakdown for the length and weight of your van, we went with NFU one year only to find that our van was too long for their breakdown cover - good job we didn't need it during that year!
As a footnote we have now bought a 2007 van and the insurance for this cost exactly the same!

one other point on European breakdown... if you intend using the toll roads make sure your insurance covers the cost of recovery as these are privately owned and organised by the police..:thumb:

Sorry to disagree Bob, but I was informed that this is not the case. It may well come into the thought process somewhere but a tiny amount.

My 1993 'M' reg VW Trident cost £323, value £10,500

My 2008 / 08 Geist Spirit costs £301 value now £45,000, both with the same insurer.

The risk of theft, likelihood of speeding/driven by young drivers has far more weight to the Premium these companies charge

as wildman said, you are either a young driver or have no no-claims bonus....NCB.

if you have NCB on a car most insurers will 'mirror' the bonus against your motorhome. IE: allow the same % discount.

if you are looking online, then put the number of years earned on your car in the quote question box.

i would expect a max of around £400 with full NCB
