The difference in exchange reates would not make much difference to the average holidaymaker.

Suppose I'm lucky then. I bank where I can hit the cash machine and draw out cash for the rate of that day without occurring any charges I'm sure it was 1-21 the other day. Also these variations make little difference to the holiday maker unless there was a major change or I was nipping accords to buy a new Motorhome

we have Santander zero account, only available to certain customers with a certain other product that many of the retired funsters won't have
This allows us cash out of the cash machine and debit card transactions at the rate of that day without any charge or commission fee.

We use Nationwide Credit Card that has the same deal although you can't use that for cash withdrawal as you incur charges. :thumb:

Happen to be in the PO yesterday enquired what their rate was :

Over £500 ....£1.16
Under £500...£ 1.12

Big diff to you guys

Will ask at our local travel agent next , know they are comission free But still won't be as good as your rates

If you do't have a santander zero account you can still get a Santander Zero credit card which is commission free on foreign purchases but does charge for cash withdrawals.

They give you transactions commission free, but then make the money back by giving you a much less exchange rate.

As I said, it may be different now, but when I looked (a few years ago) it was cheaper to stick with my regular Platinum LloydsTSB rather than have it commission free with Nationwide.

The banks are always one step ahead.

but i did about a month ago buy a different currency,and then changed that for euro's netting me euro's at 1.2100:thumb:but it aint worth doing at the moment

Its irrelivent Chris, they give the rate of the day at the time you make the transaction. The trick is to go across, straight to the cash machine and withdraw a few quid and holiday just as you would in the UK.

Craig, things must of changed, I get the rate of the day no commission, again, better to go over and hit the cash machine.
There is no catch, no gimmick its just like living over there and far better than hunting the best rate of the day and changing up all your holiday money imo

I use a caxton card. Benefits over the fairfx card is that cash withdrawals are free whereas fairfx charge.

Another benefit is that I can load the card when the rate is good and if the rate drops my money is still at the same rate as when I bought it. (I know it's a negative if the rate goes up but at least i know I got a rate I was happy with).

Not sure there is a commission charge for loading under £500 though...pretty sure it's commission free.

Beware how you pay for foreign cash.

While the holiday money comparison will find you the cheapest rates, there’s another possible hidden charge at bureau de change. All credit cards and some debit cards, including Barclays, Lloyds TSB, Natwest, Santander & RBS, charge a cash withdrawal fee.

Use a different card if possible or withdraw pounds on your debit card and pay with that.


Not all of that is true, as said, with out specialist premium account, we pay nothing for withdrawals of cash, we pay nothing in fees for using the Nationwide Credit Card, I suppose they make there money if you cant pay it back
