Best route to Madrid? (1 Viewer)

We have a 1992 Hymer which isn't too fast or powerful, so vertical passes are not the best idea, will give anything a try though!

Any suggestions for the best low cost route to Madrid from either Millau or Limoges, plus any suggested good stops on the way too?

Hope this brings out a few gems from the collective experience, and thanks.

We also have a 1992 Hymer (S700) on the same chassis as you. We went to southern Spain last winter. Our route was to cross the Spanish border via St Jean de luz to Irun and then San Sebastien. We used the A63 to cross the Pyrenees.

We were fully loaded and towing a Smart car on a trailer. It was a slow run at times we were down to first gear crawling up the crawler lane with the 4 way flashers going as required by Spanish law if you cannot maintain 60kph on the motorway. We encountered no problems with other traffic doing it this way as those that could were aware that we were going very slow so were able to plan to overtake us.

We tried to avoid toll roads but decided to use this route to get across the border because we thought the climbs would be less steep on the motorways.

The old girl just pulled and pulled even though she was almost at maxium train weight. We stopped at the filling station near the top for a cuppa and to let the engine cool before an easy run to the top and an easier run over the high plains. We headed for Panplona and Zaragoza not Burgos and Madrid, but the climb was not as big a problem as I had feared.

I have done this trip many times and the only thing I would say is that I prefer not to take the Paris route, so I go down the west side and in to Spain also at St Jean de luz to Irun a as John and Joan say.

There not a lot of difference in the distance from any of the France/Spanish border to Madrid so its just a matter of personal preference.

We are starting from an hour north of Clermont Ferrand so have the option of either the east- west central expressway across to Bellac, then Angouleme-Bordeaux, or straight down one of the great autoroutes of France to Clermont Ferrand-Beziers-Perpignan.

It's the next bit into Spain that we are unfamiliar with, as regard to ease of travel, cost and facilities.

that's the route we took to Barcelona but returned via Andorra la ville.
the A75 south from claremont ferrand is toll free except the Millau bridge..

don't know the route between Andorra and Madrid but there must be one oh:

reasonably flat through Spain and Andorra with a choice of tunnel or mountain pass near the French border towards Limouge.

we took the mountain pass which is long and steep so the tunnel (toll) may be a better option in winter.

we went Salou via Clermont Ferrand,A75.,Millaua to Narbonne then followed th N11 and N134 stayed at Salou for 7 weeks.
Then drove Via N134 via Murcia,Albecete to Borgus,San Sebastian then follewed the N10 past Bordeaux,Poitiers,Tours,Alencon,Rouen the followed coast to Dunkirk.
We had a fantastic time we drove the route with our Autotral Mohican on a Mercedes Sprinter towing a Brian James Micro Max Trailer with our Fiat Panda on it,It takes my wifes motobility scooter in the boot with rear seats folded down.
Very pleased with our Mpg too as we were taking it slow and easy we average 26.7 mpg. :thumb:
