Forgive me cos I am not a practical man and I am relatively new to this game.

Do generators give you 240v so you can use the electrical sockets ? I assume they do.

Arising from that assumption:

1. How many amps does say your average one generate?

2. how long do they run on a tank of diesel?

Sorry if this has been asked before:Doh:

Yes, normal 240V AC.

1 Depends on generator, they are sold by watts. So if you buy a 1000 ( 1Kw) generator you'll not boil a 3Kw kettle.

2.About 10 seconds - they are all petrol.

A......240v

B......1000w = 4.16amps......2000w = 8.32amps....3000w = 12.48amps

C......around 1ltr PETROL per hour at half throttle for a small suitcase genny....depends on load and engine size

diesel genny's are usually very large.....6000w upwards, and you aint even going to lift it

You can get diesel generators but they are usually big heavy beasts that will deliver 3kw but at around 80kg it would do your back if you tried to lift one.

I have a suitcase 1kw Honda which is a pleasure to use and lift, whisper quiet the sort of gear that chris green druels over.

I aslo have a 4.5Kw diesel generator at work and I lift easily.

I just have to use one of these...............

An altenative to petrol is to get one with a LPG conversion.

We have a 1Kw Honda with the conversion which we can run from our external BBQ point.

This to my mind is safer, more convenient and less smelly than carrying petrol on board and we always have LPG.

mine is 4 kva so gives enough for 2x2kw kettles it runs of the mh tank so would run for about two weeks on a full tank :thumb:
