Newbie Engine Trouble (1 Viewer)

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum and but have been the proud owner of the Bessecarr E410 Ducato with the M-jet 2.0 deisel engine since 2008.

It has 11500 miles on it and since our last trip we noticed a knocking sound from the engine.The guys at ouir dealership have already checked the injectors and are now suggesting it could be a "dropped piston" and could cost upto £2000 to repair

Has anyone else had any issues similar to this ??

Dropped piston?!!!!!!

If a piston detached from a con-rod, I'm surprised it runs at all!
You'd have much worse than just a knock!
Has this diagnosis actually been confirmed with a compression test?

If your motor is indeed kaput, I would suggest it might be best to find a breaker who can supply a whole engine. It should be a lot more economical than repair of your present lump.

Make sure you change the V5 engine number details if you go down this route though.

I would suggest you take the van to a Fiat Commercial dealer or a specialist diesel engine company.

Just reviewed the message from the dealer and I mis quoted him.....

He said after speaking to many diesel specialists it sounds like the engine has "picked up a piston and the engine will need to be removed"

Still none the wiser to what this means and as it's been with them for three weeks, I'm not convinced that they know either.

any ideas ??

Sorry, but I'm none the wiser either!

I've heard of 'piston slop' 'big end' and 'little end' wear,.... but not your 'diagnosed' problem.
Maybe someone on here will be able to offer an explanation soon......

never heard of picking up a piston, picking up a liner maybe, sounds like a bit of kidology to me take it to a main dealer. Or just get a secondhand lump to put in.

What I think they mean is "A piston has picked up" meaning a temporary seizure and scoring of the bore. If this being the case it should be burning a drop of oil. Is it smoking ???. It shouldn't be knocking if this is the case unless the piston rings on that cylinder have broken up.

I never did hear of a dropped piston, and i sure did never hear of a piston being picked up either.

A piston picked up is terminology sometimes used by older mechanics to describe a partial seizure. It normally happens after a rebuild if the clearances are not enough, but in this case the vehicle has only done 11500 miles so that's unlikely. The other cause of partial seizure can be overheating or oil contamination.

just out of interest...how did they check the injectors ?

a poor spray pattern caused by worn/damaged injectors will cause diesel knock and the only way to check that is removal and proper bench testing to look at the spray pattern.

contaminated diesel can cause premature injector nozzle wear.

a partial piston seizure shouldn't cause a knock but may result in oil smoke from the exhaust

Not only do they look at the spray pattern, they also check the pressure needed to cause the spray and it has to fall within tolerances.

usually if anything drops its a valve
this will damage the piston crown and will make a hell of a noise
you do not say if you have any other symptons which would suggest a timing problem the timing belt may be slack or jumped a tooth or the injector timing which is electronically controlled by the onboard computer may need adjusting the vehicle needs pluging in to a diagnostic machine to check this usually at a main dealer

true, but low/high pressure should also affect the spray pattern to an extent but neither of which can be checked with injectors in situ

PICKED UP A PISTON ?? IS IT TRYING TO BECOME A V8 CHEVY AS MY CHEVY RUNNS GREAT :Blush:
