Hello all,

a question on road tax for motorhomes/campers, not having got one yet I'm not sure what class and prices I would expect to pay.

Our hope is getting a long wheel base, Hi top van conversion with 2.2 to 3 litre engine.

I have also heard somewhere that the tax may change in the next few years, is this true?

Cheers

33ft long 6.8ltr V10 petrol engine 7500kg......£165pa £47 cheaper than my volvo estate

first reg after 1st march 2001 = £210

first reg after 1st march 2003 AND euro 4 or 1st jan 2009 euro 5 = £130

I am over 3.5 tons and pay less than my car.. and also at tolls such as Dartford River crossing between Essex and Kent I pay the same as a car.. not bad when you think with the car trailer on I am 45' long and near 7.5 tons.

I reckon doing away with the tax disc and adding it to the fuel you use is fairer.
The more you wear the roads and pollute the air, the more you pay.

EXCEPT, if they were to change the system, you could guarantee it would not be revenue-neutral and they would screw us even more!

One other point is that some camper van conversions are not classified as motor homes. They are taxed according to their emissions group. Something to do with being registered before the conversion.

sri to all,
finally got round to my subscription, I had run out of posts:Doh:

Thanks for all the replies, I didn't realise the tax would be so low.

A further question, if it is a second-hand van that a registered converter kitted out, would the vehicle class need to be changed for tax purposes and how would that reflect cost wise?

Cheers

to get the lower RFL the V5 has to show motorhome otherwise a change has to be applied for and normally an inspect is required. Home conversions are going to be very hard to register as a motorhome soon as they are changing the rules..as reported in MMM recently. A motorhome has to lokk like a motorhome whatever that means..

bob .think you will find private hgv is 165 regardless of if its a m,home or just used as a phgv. conversion is not important.
speaking with our local dvla they tell me that its still easy to get a m,caravan conversion changed by them. still no windows required. they back tracked i believe. cheers alan

Thanks Alan for putting me right on the matter. I was thinking this was not a PHGV but a normal sub 3,500 kgs type.

hi,2dogs .
anybody can convert a van into a camper .there is no registered converters .somevare recognised by insurers . but dont be put off . even diy conversions dont get penalised if done to a high standard and have an engineers report /valuation.
the fear brigade frighten many into thinking only recognised conversions are the way to go. you do have to make a good neat tidy safe job not just chuck it together.
visit your local dvla office they can be very helpfull. they can give you all the definitions of a motor caravan they want to see to make the change. work with them not against them.
i found our local ones very helpfull.

Oh Poo!

Got my reminder for the Land Rover today..........£460......Grrrrr:Doh:
unfair innit !

it appears all 4x4's are at the higher rate unless its a 4x4 pickup which is classed as a dual purpose/commercial vehicle.

a pickup bodied landy should be the same as a 2wd car

A Range-rover, at first registration, is £1000 for the first year and £450plus thereafter :Eeek:
