The best thing about having a motorhome is that, the day I get nicked for speeding on a French toll road is the day Ill give it up.
50mph,

Plenty fast enough.

always under 90 kph

Always under 90 kph on the roads that allow or cross country what is allowed or slow down for the towns and villages. Not worth belting it.. I want to enjoy the place.. leave enough time and then you see things.. last year we saw a british 4 x 4 and caravan being recovered on to our camp site.. rushing to the port, jammed so he cuts across country rushing and wipes out the 4 x 4.. he had no recovery just belonged to the C&C C.. thought he would not need any.. plus what bugged me he had 2 dogs and did not go to passport control for pets.. when I said real pain having to do the vets again.. he said does not matter do not do that:Angry:.. but the point is keep to the speed limits, take your time safer and more enjoyable.

As Bob said, stay below the speed limit and traps/cameras don't matter a jot! Holier than thou? Perhaps, but in 32 years of driving everything from a moped to 7.5 tonners and covering in excess of an estimated million miles I still have an unblemished licence for two very good reasons, being careful and in my younger days being lucky.

If you want results you make them invisible. It's not about a game it's about enforcing the law.

It's amazing just how law abiding the continentals are when it comes to speed. This year it was equally amazing how slow they were driving in France, Italy, German. I don't think Belgium and the Netherlands counts as they are big enough to get up to speed anyway.

Last week drove a lot through Germany and it surprised me that everyone sticks to the limit through the (many) road works. Only once did I see a speed trap in them.

German cameras at least are slightly visible but beware some slip roads where the limit is 70KPH - there are some strategically placed cameras. Anyone driving through Zurich will find well disguised cameras as well, very hard to spite unless you know what to look for - it is just easier sticking to the limit there.......

Isn't it more amazing that some Brits think it is OK to break the law?

It comes down to respect of laws.

Why can Germans drive at 200 mph and Brits 70 ?

Just because it's "law" does not make it right.

A law that is seen as "right" usually is obeyed.

If you see the Village name on a sign (just say BLOGSVILLE)as you enter a Village, that my friends is the start of the speed limit, 50kph. When you see the village name with a diagonal RED line going from top right to bottom left, that is the end of the 50kph zone, if you speed in between, you might just be escorted to the nearest Hole in the Wall M,achine and be forced to pay the Copper 400 euros!:thumb:

I personally see points on my licence as a necessary evil. I have had loads.

I don't speed around town, have never had an accident but I do give it welly on open quiet roads and quiet motorways.

Driving slow doesn't make you a good driver, it just makes you slow.

True - but given that the proportion of drivers prosecuted is rather lower than 50% then the implication is that the majority do see the law as "right"

The tone of posts in this thread seems to indicate folk think getting done for speeding in France or Germany is ok cos chances are good you will never hear anything ..

Well apart from the obvious moral issue that brings up, you may be horrified to know that while a minor speeding offence will probably still be binned, any major infraction ( and according to the books that is 20km or more in excess of the posted speed limit .. 12mph ! ) and the ticket will almost certainly follow you home from Germany and France. Italy still seem to have the 'sod it, cant be arsed' attitude to foreign drivers, and I have NO idea about Spain or Greece.. We get zero feedback from them I am afraid

No Sir, the implication is that due to the high cost of Policemen we have no means to catch the offenders. It is near impossible to rigidly obey the 30 limit without risking a rear end shunt and IMHO it's the only one that has any real meaning.

I'm all for many more patrol cars because they catch the real danger, the halfwits who speed dangerously, or for that are dangerous within the speed limits.

But in the real world we've no money and we resort to electronic detection before we have any way of detecting dangerous driving electronically. Statistically some cameras have been evaluated as having increased accidents.

The only solution, which "they" haven't got the balls to implement, is regular corrective retesting. Go to any flying club and see it work very well indeed.
