A Woosh bang
There is a lot of free software available, some good others not so.. also what have you bought that you feel is worth every penny ?

My choices of best free software are:

* Open Office 3 (writing and spreadsheets)

* Gimp 2 ( image manipulation)

* Inkscape (drawing)

* Picasa 3 (photo organiser)

* iTunes (music organiser)

* Chrome (browser)

Worth buying

Acronis True Image (backup and restore )

Free for the Mac:

Firefox (as option to Safari for sites that are troublesome)
GPS Babel (POI format converter - e.g. changes OV2 files to CSV or GPX)
Hour Guard (time tracker for my work - can set accounts, hourly rates, tasks etc.)
VLC (best allround video player)
Google Sketchup (not used a great deal but good for drawing plans)
Skype
The stuff that a Mac comes with as standard (but I don't use the iLife suite that much, other than iTunes).

Paid-for software that I use a lot:
MS Office
iWork (less so but would use extensively if I did not have Office)
Photoshop Elements

free practical tools for capture and organize DV Video tapes

I really like to share the home page of Paul Glagla.

He is French but many of his pages are in English as well !! Not in Dutch :shout::Eeek::Blush:

He offers for free many practical tools to be used if you are thinking about capture and organize all those unattended DV Video tapes you have

I have not checked all the tools yet, I tried the

CassetteDV 3.0.2:
Create a database of all your DV cassettes, by capturing a picture of each scene, eventually with comments. You may then recapture scenes by frame precision with a single click. While cataloguing a cassette, you may capture it in DV and in divx. You may also print labels for your DV cassettes.

Invest some time in carefully reading the detailed instructions on his pages and look for the best settings.
I took two DVtapes and gave it a testrun.
Made a few mistakes but eventually i am very very pleased with it.
Based on the tags i added to the clips, and/or just by selecting particular clips, I can compose very quickly the raw basis for my video editing no matter how many DVtapes i got !!

He has many other tools which can be used for free as well
