Am spending a few days chilling out on Shell Island, the largest campsite in Europe at over 300 acres. The price is a very reasonable £31.50p per person per week if your over 60 or look over 60:winky:.
No electric hookup but that's no problem as I never needed it anyway. Nice showers and toilets,Pub restaurant, supermarket and camp shop.
Only licenced for tents and motorhomes so no caravans allowed am afraid::bigsmile:.
Have a great pitch overlooking the sea and with fantastic views all around.
This is one of my favourite UK campsites and one of the few that I don't mind paying for. If your interested in sea fishing this is the ideal place to camp and if you have small children its a paradise for the, catching crabs etc.
I can thoroughly recommend this site as have been here many times and its allowed to bring your boat if you have one.

Shell Island: if you like mushrooms, take a walk first thing in the morning and up the hill towards the marina and on the right hand side of the path you might see some puffballs, absolutely delicious with butter and garlic.

shell island vineyard

Remember seeing a vineyard just on the road into the campsite years ago. Don't know if its still there?
Happy memories of family holidays on shell island and now the grand kids will be going.

Missed the vineyard, do they do tastings?
There's an old airbase or something just before the start of the causeway.

Just remember that it was on the left on the raod into the campsite. But as you have to turn a bend you can't realy see it. Only noticed it as we where walking up the road to climb the hill into Harlech.

Just had trawl through google and nothing comes up. Maybe it didn't prosper and had to be shut down? It was many moons ago after all.

It used to be a RAF secret research station in unmanned aircraft...

I went to Shell Island tenting twice in 1966 and I remember the unmanned planes. At that time there were no facilities apart from water as far as I can remember. But you could phone the farmer, Mr Workman, on say Thursday and he would predict the weather for the weekend - apparently he was always right. Now his grandson is running the site - there are 800 plus pitches.

Visited there again 2007, with a friend in her campervan - I asked her to take me there to see if I liked campervanning - and I did. Bought the updated model of hers, and am happy with it!!

On that occasion we had a lovely little beach almost to ourselves, just one other van. It was marvellous!

I think the firework display is to mark the end of the season.
Best part about it for me is that all units must be 20 metres apart.
None of this clumping for me thanks::bigsmile:
Brought my brazier and sat round a campfire till god knows what time this morning....HEAVEN.

Sounds marvellous. I'm a 'clumping' hating type so I've added it to my list of places to visit :thumb:

Yes it is to mark the end of season. They also put up two large marques and have a bar in one and a couple of bands perform over the night in the other. This is all for the price of a nights camping.

It was marvellous when I went as well.
I'm not into angels or spirits or anything mystic but there seems to be a magic feeling about the place.

Hi snowbird

Think I saw you RV,(was your hood up) I was there my self until today, we have just bought a C class four winds and this was it's first trip, I parked right up on the beach carpark and to my surprise did not get moved, looked right on to the beach, only bad thing I could say could just do with showers at other end of site, but just a great unspoiled site, bit gutted I missed the wine tasting ...regards

Fireworks and halloween do on 28th and 29th October.

Unfortunately, it's too late in the season - too cold for mum. So, regretfully, will have to give it a miss.

Shell Island was on that tv programme last week where two families exchange holidays.

The 'posh' family was taken to Shell Island by the other family and they camped in tents. They were disgusted at the open air toilet and said 'we arn't using that.' I think it was the toilet disposal for the motorhomes..:ROFLMAO:

It looked really nice and well worth a visit.:thumb:
