Hi, it is the time of year when all the insurance is due, including Travel Insurance.

Last year we used EHIC Plus, we tried a lot of others, but decided not to take out a mortgage to pay for some of them!!

The EHIC plus relies on you using the EHIC card, and we have just received the renewal and in large black letters it states. "This insurance policy provides NO MEDICAL CARE EXPENSES coverage because it is limited to trips to and within European countris that are members of the reciprocal health agreement that underpin the EHIC card."

Now we dont want baggage cover, or delayed flight etc etc, so my question is - What exactly are we paying our £120.70 for?? The only thing I can see is repatriation (of the body!)?

Any ideas or comments would be appreciated. It seems to me we are too easily conned into buying insurance "Just in case". Am I wrong? or will something be bound to happen if for the first year we dont take out travel insurance?

I have just contacted NFU, they do not provide Travel insurance unless you already have insurance (Car house etc) with them.

Interesting thread. I have no travel insurance.

What does it cover? If I have european health card and full breakdown cover for the motorhome, what does travel insurance cover? As has been said baggage, delayed flights, cancelled hotel rooms etc are of no consequence, so what is it for?

Never found it necessary, so never used it, used the hospitals once or twice and the health card was good enough.

Excellent point. I think we are all programmed by fear. Insurance companies reap the benefits. :Angry:I'm seriously considering cancelling my travel insurance.

Not sure I'd want to go away uninsured. What happens if you need medical repatriation?
Just heard on tv today about a chap who had to be repatriated without insurance at a cost of £90k. His elderly parents had to borrow the money and if they don't pay it back soon will lose their home!.

Interesting. Tesco has too many limitations for us (age under 65 for over 31 days away for example).
We have used EHIC-Plus in the past but have also come to the conclusion - my wife having had a TIA and "computer says no" syndrome coming to the fore - that Travel Insurance for Motorhomers in Europe is a waste of money. Look deeply at the Ehic-Plus small print. I think you will find that you don't get an awful lot for your money. And there are many, many ways that they could avoid paying out if they wanted to do so.
About the only thing we may possibly need is repatriation costs to be covered. But a search for Air Ambulance costs on Google reveals that - for France to UK anyway - you are probably going to be looking at between 5K to 10K (and this includes a probable Lear Jet and all in-flight medical doctors and nurses). In the very unlikely event we will need this we think the savings can run to that!
Not sure where the 90K in the previous post came from - possibly repatriation from the USA?

Hi David,

It was great to see you yesterday.

Just tried to get a quote from the link, but they do not offer any insurance for a person who is over 64 and wants to be away more than 45 days!

Still looking!

I have heard a lot of good reports about ADAC. We have already renewed our breakdown insurance with Comfort for this year, but we will certainly get a quote from them next year, thanks for the information.

I think that this was the chap who injured himself jumping into shallow water in the far east insurance co would not pay out, self inflicted and all that included hospital costs etc

Hi Norrie, I believe this is only applicable if you want to join online. :thumb:

You just need to phone them and ask to speak to an English speaking operator. There are many funsters who are members.... and who have used them, even for home start in the UK.:thumb:

Check out this funsters link..... lots of info....

and some more info.......

"Beside the tried and tested ADAC membership there is the ADACPlusMembership: it combines the traditional club membership with ADAC Euro-Schutzbrief.

Being an ADACPlusMember constitutes a major extension of services in Germany for you. Furthermore, we offer you financial safeguards in other European countries. In the event of illness and injury we will even protect you worldwide. The costs of medical treatment by a doctor or in a hospital on journeys, however, are not covered by the ADACPlusMembership.

The attractive service package of the ADACPlusMembership protects you and your spouse/partner when driving your own and also other party's vehicles in Germany and Europe-wide following a breakdown, accident and theft. In addition each other driver may claim the same services, when driving a vehicle that is registered in your or your spouse's name. With the following services we will help you, if the protected vehicle is no longer mobile owing to an accident or if it was stolen:

- Breakdown and accident assistance (§ 23) to EUR 200.-
- Assistance with lost or defective car keys (§ 24)
- Towing (§ 25) up to EUR 200.-
- Off-road recovery (§ 26)
- Accommodation costs after vehicle loss (§ 27)
- Transfers after vehicle loss (§ 28)
- Travel expenses after loss of driver (§ 29)
- Vehicle transportation (§ 30)
- Passenger transport "Pick-up" (§ 31)
- Spare parts despatch (§ 32)
- Vehicle customs clearance and scrapping (§ 33)

The person-related PlusServices following illness and injury are even provided to you, your spouse/partner and your minor children on journeys worldwide, regardless of the means of transport chosen. The PlusServices following illness and injury include:

- Medical repatriation (§ 12)
- Accommodation expenses (§ 13)
- Hospital visit (§ 14)
- Escort service for children (§ 15)
- Non-scheduled return (§ 16)
- Assistance in special emergencies (§ 17)
- Repatriation of pets (§ 18)
- Medication and spectacles despatch (§ 19)
- Assistance with the loss of travel documents (§ 20)
- Interpreters service (§ 21)
- Vehicle recovery in the event of vehicle loss in Europe
(§ 22)
- Credit services

The comprehensive safety of the ADACPlusMembership is available to you for an annual fee of EUR 79,50. As your wife is included in the ADACPlusCover, she would not need the associate membership.

The ADACPlusMembership protects all vehicles regardless of the vehicle type, which do not exceed the following measures and dimensions:

max. vehicle length 10,- m
max. total length 2,55 m
max. total height 3,- m Motorcaravans max. 3,20 m
max. admissible total weight 3,50 t Motorcaravans max. 7,50 t
max. number of persons (incl. driver) 9 persons

The insurance covers free of charge the towed one-axle trailer which includes the above mentioned dimensions and weights (including cargo). Trailers whose axles are less than 1 m apart are regarded as one-axle trailers.

Hope this helps......

David

It covers repatriation plane of a badly injured or dead person (unbelievably expensive) and also gives much more cover than the basic IHIC cover. You can usually control the level of cover paid for.

Do you need it. If no one ever gets ill then no - if someone gets very ill then yes.

You will not be repatriated in the case of a serious illness without extra cover. This becomes more important for those partaking in dangerous sports and for those, like me, who are getting a bit long in the tooth. Also, in theory, there is a dedicated line to give help whilst ill.

Depends where you are holidaying, what age you are and if you are a betting man/woman or not. You refer to insurances not paying up, normally due to customers not declairing all pre-existing medical conditions or the like.
If you destination is long haul then travailing without insurance in my mind would be daft, falling ill in the US can be life changing so the choice is yours. If you feel like saving a few bob, go for it you might be lucky. :winky:

One thing all you motorbikers should check is your travel insurance. Most off the shelf policies only give you cover if you are riding a bike up to 125cc.
