Driving Licence C1 - Can anyone help? (1 Viewer)

We promised to lend our Hymer B584 to our daughter and partner. However,on checking, we discovered that anyone who passed their driving test after 1997 does not automatically have C1 on their licence. Our van is classed as Private (Heavy Goods) at 3800 - C1 being anything over 3500.
We've also been told that it doesn't apply to motorhomes - does anyone know if this is true? Looks as though they'll have to change their holiday plans.

I'm afraid it applies to most if not all vehicles including motorhomes. (I think agricultural tractors may be excluded.) So they will not be able to drive the Hymer at 3,800 Kg. They can of course take the necessary driving course and test for C1 but I think it's quite expensive and there may not be time before they want to head off. We have a funster who runs an HGV training centre so I'm sure he will give you more information.

p.s. I'm assuming that they currently hold category B licences.

unfortunately Philip is correct.

anyone driving any vehicle over 3500kg and under 7500kg on the road must have a C1 category.....whether it be a new C1 or pre 1997 'grandfather rights' C1.

motorhomes are no different to any other vehicle for licencing purposes.

Thanks. Both these replies confirm what we thought - just wanted to know if anyone knew differently. Looks like they are now touring Scotland with a tent!

What the others say is correct....and also one to watch for now, is anything CAPABLE of carrying 3500kg laden.

So a van at 2.6t unladen is off limits as it can carry over 3.5 - also come under the lower speed limits too!

Other surprise contender is the Fiat Doblo - In van form, has a huge payload and comes under 3.5t rules! Lots of people get done for speeding in them!

You shall have to chaperone them - like the old days! I am sure they would love that

Try looking for Bongo hire - they can drive those!

dont forget to fit haggis bars....a bit like bull bars only smaller and tartan painted.

I passed my test in 99 so had to take the C1 test. Best thing I ever did. Took a day and a half training with the test on the afternoon of the second day.
It might be worth them taking it for future opportunities
